Downwinders Across West Commemorate

National Day of Remembrance

       Across the West, downwinders are staging events to mark what the U.S. Senate has designated a national Day of Remembrance for victims of nuclear weapons testing on Friday, January 27, the date in 1951 on which the first nuclear weapons tests were conducted at the Nevada Test Site.

       The Senate resolution was introduced by Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), who is also one of six western senators pushing for the expansion of compensation to downwinders. During the Cold War, the United States detonated more than 1,000 nuclear weapons at the Nevada Test Site. Clouds of fallout filled with radioactive isotopes spread across the U.S., exposing a generation of Americans. The West was particularly hard hit.

       In Utah, Governor Gary Herbert, local leaders in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Kane County and Springdale have joined with the U.S. Senate in designating Jan. 27 as a Day of Remembrance.

       “It’s important that we preserve the past, but it’s also important that we protect the future,” says downwinder Eve Mary Verde. “The cancers we’ve suffered and the loved ones we’ve lost demand more than one day of remembrance. They demand that we act. We must bring a permanent end to nuclear weapons testing and we must ensure justice for downwinders affected by past tests.”

       In Salt Lake City, downwinders will honor the silent victims of the Cold War in the Hall of Governors at the Utah State Capitol at noon on Friday. Making remarks at the event will be Rep. Jim Matheson, a long-time advocate for downwinders and Salt Lake City downwinder Mary Dickson; Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, presenting his proclamation; and Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, presenting his proclamation. They’ll be joined by a bi-partisan group of current and former state representatives who sponsored past resolutions concerning nuclear weapons testing and downwinders.

       That evening, the Utah Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, will hold a candlelight vigil honoring and remembering downwinders at 5:30 p.m. at the Episcopal Church Center of Utah, 75 S. 200 E. Remarks will be made by the Very Reverend Raymond Joe Waldon, Jr., Dean and Rector of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Marks in Salt Lake City and the Reverend Steve Klenz, Pastor of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Salt Lake City.

       A commemoration is set for noon Friday at Utah Valley University in the Library Lecture Hall, room 120. The event will include films as well as a history of fallout in Utah County by J. Preston Truman, head of Downwinders, Inc.

       Elsewhere in Utah, resolutions and proclamations marking the Day of Remembrance have been passed by Springdale Mayor Pat Cluff. The Kane County Commission passed a resolution Monday. Ironically, the mayor of St. George, which was the epicenter of fallout, for undisclosed reasons declined to declare Jan. 27 a Day of Remembrance.

       Elsewhere in the West, vigils are scheduled in Boise, Idaho; Kingman, Arizona. Downwinders will gather across northern New Mexico and southwest Colorado and in Montana, as well.

       The Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City and Springdale resolutions include support of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty – which would put in place a global ban on nuclear weapons testing -- and the expansion of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA). Currently RECA covers only 10 counties in Utah, even though studies have documented that counties across Utah and the West received dangerously high levels of fallout.

       A 2005 Congressional Report from the Committee on Government Reform found that “radiation associated cancer is actually more common in counties where residents are excluded from compensation than in those counties where residents are included under RECA law.”

       A bipartisan group of six western senators introduced a bill into Congress which would provide RECA coverage to all areas hit by fallout in the West. The bill , being pushed by Sen. Tom Udall (D-New Mexico), Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D- New Mexico), Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), James Risch (R-Idaho), Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colorado), Sen. Mark Udall, (D-Colorado), has currently stalled in Congress.

       “This about getting justice and medical assistance for all those who were harmed by fallout,” says J. Preston Truman. “We’re not willing to forget nor to forgive. We’re going to make sure it never happens again, which is why it’s so important to remember what started on that day 61 years ago when we were told, ’There is no danger.’ We owe it to ourselves, those who have died, but more importantly to our children and future generations that we pass the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty so no new downwinders will be created.”

Through photography, installation, and performance, New York-based artist Xaviera Simmons constructs multivalent narratives of collective and personal histories. Her work often references traditions of American landscape painting, exploring depictions of the individual in nature. salt 4: Xaviera Simmons features a series of photographs, as well as a sculptural installation made of hand-lettered, locally found wooden scraps affixed directly to the gallery wall. This tangled matrix of text gleaned from notes, news articles, folklore, and literature forms its own kind of lyrical landscape, one imbued with historical and personal memory. Exhibition runs through February 26, 2012.

Family and friends gather… an hilarious, mystery thriller ignites! Is it the Inspector, the actor, the fiancé, the sweet young thing or the aged mother? Sherlock Holmes to the rescue!

“Hale Centre Theatre has done outstanding work in producing my shows in the past, and I'm honored that they have chosen my newest play to present at their wonderful theater this season," Ludwig said.

“The Game’s Afoot” begins with famed stage actor William Gillette at his Connecticut castle, recovering from an attempt on his life following a performance of his renowned play, “Sherlock Holmes.” It’s Christmas Eve, and much to his mother Martha’s chagrin, William invites fellow actors Aggie, Simon, Felix and Madge over for the holiday weekend. His elaborate home, filled with gadgets and hidden passageways, becomes the setting for a murder, and Gillette must use the Sherlock Holmes crime-solving skills he made famous on stage to catch the culprit.

HCT’s “The Game’s Afoot” is directed by David Nieman. The show stars Mitch Hall and David Stensrud as William Gillette (Sherlock Holmes). Costumes were designed by Suzanne Carling; scenic design by Jennifer Stapley Taylor; lighting design by Adam Flitton; production assistance by Tammy Morgan; props by Michelle Jensen; and sound design by Dan Morgan.

Utah Opera Presents Verdi's "Rigoletto"

Utah Opera will present Verdi’s enduring masterpiece, “Rigoletto,” a classic tale of revenge and regret, at the Capitol Theatre January 23, 25 and 27 at 7:30 p.m. and January 29 at 2 p.m.

Verdi’s opera follows Rigoletto, a hunchbacked jester notorious for ridiculing and mocking the fathers and husbands of the women dishonored by the Duke of Mantua. Rigoletto’s malicious tongue ultimately earns him a curse that haunts his every step toward revenge against the Duke for deceiving his own daughter, Gilda. In his vengeful chase, Rigoletto pays an assassin to trick and kill the duke, but finds he is the fool and instead pays for his cruel mockeries with a loss of horrific proportion.

“Rigoletto” has become a staple of the standard operatic repertoire. It contains some of opera’s most recognizable arias, such as “Questa o Quella,” “Caro Nome” and “La Donna é Mobile,” and is considered to be the first masterpiece of Verdi’s middle-to-late career.

Cast members include Guido LeBrón as Rigoletto, Robert McPherson as the Duke of Mantua, Eric Jordan as Sparafucile and local Utah favorite Celena Shafer as Gilda, Directed by Tara Faircloth. The Utah Symphony will accompany each performance, conducted by Robert Tweten. The opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. With two twenty-minute intermissions, approximate final curtain time will be 9:45 p.m. for evening performances and 4:15 p.m. for the matinee.

Utah Opera Principal Coach Carol Anderson will offer an Opera Prelude Lecture, free of charge, in the front of the orchestra seating level of Capitol Theatre one hour before curtain of each performance.

Utah Opera Artistic Director Christopher McBeth will hold a Q&A session, free of charge, immediately following each performance in the Founders room on the mezzanine level at Capitol Theatre (50 West 200 South).

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove?

Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and un-seeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernatural beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Heber Valley Railroad’s “North Pole Express” has added a new element to their already magical journey and will feature live performances from local talented choirs aboard the train that Utah families will treasure and never forget this holiday season.

Heber Valley Railroad has joined creative forces with high school choirs in Utah, Salt Lake, and Wasatch Counties to bring some of the best entertainment yet. Choirs will rotate through the train performing classic holiday songs and leading passengers in festive sing-a-longs while Cocoa Chefs serve hot cocoa and cookies to passengers. The Utah Symphony and Utah Symphony Chorus invite Utah audiences to participate in the annual “Messiah” Sing-In, conducted by Utah Symphony Chorus Master Susanne Sheston.

Vocalists John Buffett (baritone), Andrew Penning (tenor), Sishel Claverie (mezzo-soprano) and Jennie Litster (soprano) will join a harmonious 3,000 voice choir, made up of the Utah Symphony Chorus and Abravanel Hall audience members, for Handel’s famous oratorio Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27 at 7 p.m. in Abravanel Hall.

This will be the organization’s 34th presentation of the sing-in featuring the “Messiah,” a passionate oratorio narrative following the life of Jesus Christ, starting with God’s promises of the coming Messiah as spoken by the prophets and ending with Christ’s glorification in heaven. It is an inspirational masterpiece that has been performed all over the world for more than 250 years and is recognized today as one of the most famous choral works ever written.

Susanne Sheston, Conductor

Susanne Sheston directs both the Utah Symphony Chorus and the Utah Opera Chorus. In addition, Susanne recently completed her fourth season as Chorus Master of the internationally acclaimed Santa Fe Opera, where she prepares a professional chorus for four or five fully-staged productions each summer. As a choral conductor, she has collaborated with many leading operatic and symphonic conductors, including David Robertson of the St. Louis Symphony, Edo de Waart of the Milwaukee Symphony and Hong Kong Philharmonic, Patrick Summers of Houston Grand Opera, Frédéric Chaslin of The Santa Fe Opera, and Leonard Slatkin of the Detroit Symphony, among others. In addition to her choral collaborations, Susanne particularly enjoys conducting Utah Symphony | Utah Opera’s “Night at the Opera”, an annual concert for children with autism and their families, and working with the Utah Opera resident artists. For Utah Opera, Sheston recently conducted “Suor Angelica”/”Gianni Schicch “ and “Don Pasquale” at the Capitol Theatre. Prior to joining Utah Symphony and Utah Opera, Dr. Sheston was the chorus master at Des Moines Metro Opera and was a member of the music faculty at Simpson College in Iowa. Trained as a pianist, Sheston studied with Robert Larsen, Howard Lubin, and Joanne Baker.

Jennie Litster, Soprano

She has been charming audiences with her “coquettish sparkle and suppleness” in the San Francisco Bay Area for years. Recently seen with Livermore Valley Opera and Opera San Jose, Litster has also traveled eastward to sing with the Ash Lawn Festival Opera in Charlottesville, Virginia and returned to join The Virginia Consort as the soprano soloist in “Carmina Burana.” Other recent accolades include being named a Utah District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2011 and competing regionally in Denver, Colorado. This summer she performed with Utah Festival Opera. As Utah Opera’s Soprano Resident Artist, she will sing Gianetta in Donizetti's “L'Elisir d'Amore” in 2012.

Sishel Claverie, Mezzo-Soprano

She was born in Mexico City and is an Alumna of S.I.V.A.M., Mexico’s most prestigious Young Artist Program. Sishel holds a Master's degree in music from Rice University. Her operatic roles include Komponist in “Ariadne auf Naxos,” the title role in “Chérubin,” Dorabella in “Così fan Tutte,” and Meg in “Little Women,” among others. Claverie has been a Studio Artist at Wolf Trap, and at Renata Scotto Opera Studio in Rome, Italy. She was also a member of Houston Grand Opera’s outreach program, Opera to Go! Her future engagements include the role of Secretary (cover) in Menotti's “The Consul” at Opera New Jersey.

Andrew Penning, Tenor

A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, he holds the degrees of M.M in Vocal Performance from the University of Cincinnati: College-Conservatory of Music, and a B.M in Vocal Performance from Lawrence University. Joining Utah Opera this fall as a Resident Artist, he will sing the role of Borsa in “Rigoletto” and cover the role of Nemorino in “The Elixir of Love.” Penning spent the summer of 2011 as a Fellow at Tanglewood Music Festival singing, among other assignments, the Second Tenor in Stravinsky’s “Renard.” Recently he has performed the roles of the Male Chorus in Benjamin Britten’s “The Rape of Lucretia,” The Chevalier in Poulenc’s “Dialogues of the Carmelites,” and Monsieur Lacouf in “Les Mamelles de Tiresias.” Penning has also been an active concert soloist in a variety of works including: Monteverdi’s “Vespers,” Handel’s “Messiah” Saint-Saëns’ “Christmas Oratorio,” J.S Bach’s “Magnificat,” J.S Bach’s “Cantata 12,” Haydn’s “Grosse Orgelmesse” in E Flat, and Bruckner’s “Te Deum.”

John Buffett, Baritone

A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, he is known for his concert, recital and opera work in various styles from Monteverdi to Puccini. Some of his favorite roles include Schaunard in “La Bohème,” Golaud in “Pelléas et Méllisande” and Figaro in “Le nozze di Figaro.” He has performed with the opera companies of Utah, Sarasota, Memphis, Rochester and the Boston Early Music Festival, and on the concert stage with the Syracuse Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, and Apollo’s Fire. Buffett has won various competitions, including the Kneisel Lieder Competition and Eastman’s Concerto Competition. He has been a young artist with the Opera companies of Sarasota and Memphis and is currently a Resident Artist with Utah Opera.

The Utah Symphony, guest conductor Gary Walker and piano virtuoso Denis Kozhukhin present "Evening of Russian Favorites"

Garry Walker may hail from Scotland, but later this month he will take Utah Symphony patrons to the musical landscapes of Russia in a concert featuring Russian native Denis Kozhukhin as soloist on Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra.

Along with Prokofiev’s concerto, for which the composer himself was the original soloist, concertgoers will hear symphonies by Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22 at 8 p.m. in the Abravanel Hall.

The concert will begin with Symphony No. 1 by the revolutionary Igor Stravinsky, named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Following this will be Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.1, which will be beautifully realized by the young Kozhukhin, whose talent is garnering him comparisons to former great concert pianists. The Program will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s joyous Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, nicknamed the “Little Russian” because of its extensive use of folk songs from Ukraine, which at the time was frequently called “Little Russia.”

Garry Walker, Conductor

Scottish born Garry Walker studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and in July 1999 won the Sixth Leeds Conductor's Competition. In October 1999 he replaced at very short notice an indisposed Daniele Gatti in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's opening concert of their Barbican season and thus began an on going relationship resulting in his appointment as Permanent Guest Conductor, a post he recently relinquished.

Garry Walker was Principal Conductor of Paragon Ensemble and now enjoys a close association with Red Note Ensemble Scotland's premiere contemporary music ensemble.

In the UK Garry Walker has worked with all the BBC orchestras, the Hallé, National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, English Northern Philharmonia, London Sinfonietta, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Chamber orchestras have included the Northern Sinfonia, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra and Academy of St Martin's in the Fields. With SCO he has appeared at the St. Magnus Festival, with the ECO in Lisbon and the City of London Festival and with ASMF at the Barbican's Mostly Mozart Festival. He regularly appears at the Edinburgh Festival and in 2004 conducted a notable performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 ‘Resurrection' with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Outside the UK he has most recently appeared with the Nieuw Ensemble. Garry Walker has also appeared with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg and the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin. In 2007 he made his debut with Collegium Musicum in Denmark and was invited to return in 2008 and 2009. In 2008 he made a very successful début with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to which he will return in April 2011.

An experienced opera conductor, Garry Walker conducted Britten's Curlew River at the 2005 Edinburgh Festival and the following year the world premiere of Stuart Macrae's opera The Assasin Tree which he subsequently conducted at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Studio. In 2007 he made his debut with English National Opera in David McVicar's much acclaimed production of Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw and in 2008 conducted Cimarosa's The Secret Marriage for Scottish Opera and Curlew River for Lyon Opera.

During the autumn of 2010 Garry Walker conducted Alexander Raskatov's A Dog's Heart for English National Opera, a co-production with De Nederlandse Opera.

Denis Kozhukhin, Piano

Not only did Denis Kozhukhin win the most prestigious competition of the world with the 1st Prize of Queen Elisabeth Competition 2010, but he is also considered one of the most talented pianists of his generation, evoking memories of the great Russian musicians of the past such as Guilels, Richter, and Horowitz.

Born in 1986, Denis Kozhukhin was initiated to piano by his parents. He studied at Zhavoronok School, and then at Balakirev School with Natalia Fish receiving a diploma with honor when he was only 14. In 2000-2007 he studied in the Queen Sofia High Music School of Madrid with Dmitri Bashkirov and Claude Martinez-Menher. He had master classes with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Zakhar Bron, Gerard Causse, Claude Franck, Ralf Gothoni, Christian Ivaldi, Zoltan Kocsis, Stephan Kovacevich, Vitali Margulis, Menahem Pressler, Fou Ts'ong, Rosalyn Tureck, Elisso Virsaladze, among others. During these years he recieved a diploma with honor by the Queen Sofia herself as the best student and twice as the best chamber music group with his Cervantes Trio. He has been under Dmitri Bashkirov's protection for many years, and has followed master classes at the International Academy Lake Como in Italy and classes with Kirill Gerstein in Stuttgart Musik Hochschule.

His prizes of International Piano Competitions already include: 1st Prize at Queen Elisabeth Competition 2010, 1st Prize at Vendome Prize 2009 in Lisbon, 3rd Prize at Leeds International Piano Competition 2006, 1st Prize at Morocco International Music Competition 2010, the Grand Prix at Alicia de Larrocha Competition (Andorra), Reuters Foundation Price (Verbier Festival & Academy), the Grand Prix at "In Svyatoslav Richter´s Memory" 1997, the Grand Prix at Tortona 1996.

His next engagements include concerts in the most prestigious halls and festivals of the world including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall in New York, Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, Chopin Festival in Poland, Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival, Bouffes, Louvre, the Hamburger Symphoniker conducted by Jeffrey Tate (Brahms 1), the Hungarian National Philharmonic conducted by Zoltan Kocsis in Budapest & Szeged (Prokofiev 2).

Continuing its tradition of providing free Tram and lift rides while helping Utah’s hungry, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort announced it will extend Customer Appreciation Days to four weekends. Beginning the weekend of Oct. 15-16, guests may receive a free Peruvian Express foot passenger ticket with the donation of a can of food, hygiene item or $3 donation to Wasatch Adaptive Sports.

“Snowbird’s Customer Appreciation Days are a meaningful way to support our community and at the same time show our guests that we appreciate their enthusiasm and loyalty to our resort,” said Bob Bonar, President of Snowbird.

All food and hygiene items will be donated to the Utah Food Bank, and all monetary donations will benefit Wasatch Adaptive Sports. Last year, a record-breaking 6,956 pounds – the equivalent of 5,500 meals – was donated to the Utah Food Bank as the result of the annual Customer Appreciation Days. In addition, $2,215 was raised for Wasatch Adaptive Sports.

To take advantage of the offer, guests may bring either a can of food, a hygiene item or $3, to Snowbird on any Saturday or Sunday from Oct. 15 through Nov. 6 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Due to Tram maintenance, guests will receive a Peruvian Express foot passenger ticket the first two weekends (Oct. 15, 16, 22, or 23). Guests will receive an Aerial Tram foot passenger ride the last two weekends (Oct. 29, 30 or Nov. 5, 6), weather permitting. Please check snowbird.com for updates on the schedule of operations.

Too Close ~ Critical Moments of Our History Captured in Photographs.

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) is pleased to present David Burnett – Too Close, a look at a lifetime of iconic events captured by photojournalist David Burnett (b. 1946). The exhibition will be on view in the Marcia and John Price Museum Building at the University of Utah from October 7, 2011 through January 29, 2012. Burnett will travel from New York to Salt Lake City to give a free public lecture at the UMFA on October 6 at 6 pm.

Organized by Jill Dawsey, chief curator at the UMFA, David Burnett – Too Close comprises over 50 photographs by Burnett, offering museum visitors a glimpse into critical moments of the 20th and 21st centuries. Recognized as one of the “100 Most Important People in Photography” by American Photo Magazine, Burnett has traveled to over 80 countries to cover wars, political figures, celebrities, and ordinary people in everyday life.

A Salt Lake City native, Burnett began his career as a freelancer for Time and LIFE magazines. In 1976 he co-founded Contact Press Images, a photo agency in New York City. Over the past four decades, he has covered such pivotal events as the Vietnam War, the 1984 drought in Ethiopia, Hurricane Katrina in 2006, and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Burnett is also known for capturing intimate images of public figures ranging from Barack Obama to Bob Marley.

His numerous awards include the National Press Photographers Association’s Magazine Photographer of Year, the World Press Photo of the Year, and Best Campaign Picture. National Geographic described Burnett as “someone who can—no matter how challenging the assignment—return with the picture.”

“We are delighted and honored to welcome this world-renowned photojournalist back to his hometown,” said Jill Dawsey, chief curator at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. “Burnett’s body of work is astonishing both for its formal innovations—he is an expert in so many photographic techniques and technologies—and for the expansive sweep of late 20th and 21st century history that he has captured.”

Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is hosting a ski and snowboard gear swap to help raise funds for Snowbird Sports Education Foundation. Admission is free, and there are no tag fees. 25 percent of the sales will benefit Snowbird Sports Education Foundation. The swap will include both hard goods and soft goods. All major credit cards will be accepted.

Snowbird Sports Education Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization that was founded in 1979. What began as the Snowbird Ski Team has expanded into a competition and training program for three winter sport programs: Alpine Ski Racing, Freeride and Snowboard. These three programs provide physical fitness objectives for Utah youth ages six to 21, with 200 children participating annually.

String Quartet Programs

Utah Symphony | Utah Opera invites Summit County residents to attend several free education events held in conjunction with the Deer Valley® Music Festival and the organization’s Emerging Quartets and Composers program.

Among these events are string quartet master classes on July 15 and July 27 at 4:30 p.m. at the Utah Conservatory in Kimball Junction near Park City, as well as a community concert featuring two string quartets at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Park City on July 30 at 1 p.m. The participating quartets, Publiquartet from New York City and Iris Quartet from Boston, are taking part in the intensive Emerging Quartets and Composers training program this summer.

The three-week program consists of demanding rehearsals and master classes with professional coaching by the renowned Muir Quartet and Pulitzer prize-winning composer Joan Tower. During their time in Utah, the two semi-professional quartets will work on classical repertoire and premieres of new music by young composers also involved in the program. This year, the quartets will premiere “Double Helix” by Maxwell McKee and “Thyme” by Antonin Fajt.

These emerging artists will also spend time during their final week in Utah at the Lyceum Music Festival summer music camp coaching young local musicians at the Zermatt Resort in Midway.

An integral part of Deer Valley® Music Festival’s education programs since its founding in 2003, the Emerging Quartets and Composers summer program actually began in 1989. It has had various homes in Utah, including Snowbird as well as Park City, but has always been a project of the Muir String Quartet and Joan Tower.

ABOUT THE MUIR QUARTET:
The Muir Quartet features founder Mike Reynolds, cello; Peter Zazofsky, violin; Steven Ansell, viola; Lucia Lin, violin. Now in its 31st season, the Muir String Quartet has long been acknowledged as one of the world's most powerful and insightful ensembles, distinguishing itself among audiences and critics with its "exhilarating involvement" (Boston Globe),"impeccable voicing and intonation" (San Francisco Examiner) and "unbridled musicality" (American Record Guide).

Winner of the 1981 Naumburg Chamber Music Award and 1980 Evian Competition, the Muir String Quartet was greeted with rave reviews and an extensive feature in the New Yorker. They were soon featured on the internationally acclaimed PBS broadcast, In Performance at the White House for President and Mrs. Reagan.

ABOUT JOAN TOWER:
Joan Tower is widely regarded as one of the most important American composers living today. During a career spanning more than fifty years, she has made lasting contributions to musical life in the United States as composer, performer, conductor, and educator. Her works have been commissioned by major ensembles, soloists, and orchestras, including the Emerson, Tokyo and Muir quartets, soloists Evelyn Glennie, Carol Wincenc, David Shifrin, John Browning, and the orchestras of Chicago, New York, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC among others.

Tower was the first composer chosen for a Ford Made in America consortium commission of sixty-five orchestras. Leonard Slatkin and the Nashville Symphony recorded Made in America in 2008 (along with Tambor and Concerto for Orchestra). The album collected three Grammy awards: Best Classical Contemporary Composition, Best Classical Album, and Best Orchestral Performance.

In 1990 she became the first woman to win the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for Silver Ladders, a piece she wrote for the St. Louis Symphony where she was Composer-in-Residence from 1985-88. Other residencies with orchestras include a 10-year residency with the Orchestra of St. Luke's (1997-2007) and the Pittsburgh Symphony (2010-2011).

Tower studied piano and composition at Bennington College and Columbia University. Her earliest works were serial in concept, but her music soon developed the lyricism, rhythmic drive, and colorful orchestration that characterize her subsequent works. She is currently Asher Edelman Professor of Music at Bard College, where she has taught since 1972. Her music is published by Associated Music Publishers.

In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and Church History Museum have partnered to stage the largest exhibition ever mounted by famed Utah artist LeConte Stewart (1891-1990). The shared effort focuses on the most creative and skilled period of Stewart's long career. With a combined total of over 200 paintings and works on paper selected from museums and private collections across the west, these joint exhibitions will feature masterworks that have rarely been seen.

The UMFA’s exhibition, LeConte Stewart: Depression Era Art, explores themes of isolation and loss during the Great Depression, a period when the artist examined thematic images of progress juxtaposed to the human consequences of economic upheaval. Farms and homes that had been depicted in his earlier work at a warm distance are replaced in the 1930s with stark urban scenes devoid of human activity, using bold shapes and unfamiliar lighting to capture a mood of isolation in his subjects. Stewart was not a WPA artist and was therefore free to paint the "...raw side of life" as he once commented. His vision of the Great Depression sets his work apart from his peers and places it within the broader context of American Scene painters of the time.

The Church History Museum’s exhibition, LeConte Stewart: The Soul of Rural Utah, will reveal the beauty of Utah’s early rural works on paper and paintings with an emphasis of rural Utah. Farmhouses, barns and fields are depicted in rich tones with thick impasto and loose brushstrokes. They are familiar scenes of the western environment. It is a backdrop in which Stewart found not only the isolation he sought throughout his life, but a spirit in the land that was of solace to him.

Each of us does what we can to make our world safer and cleaner: Perhaps we drive a fuel-efficient car, bike when we can, and choose to live near where we work. Maybe we keep the thermostat a bit lower in the winter and a bit higher in the summer.

All are important steps to green our lives. However, many of us don’t think much about an action we take each month with an even greater impact: Paying our electric bills. The power we consume – and the dollars we pay for it – may have more to do with how we shape our public health and the environment than anything else. However, we rarely have direct influence over that power: We don’t get to pick our utility. And most of us don’t have the tools to know how to convince our utilities to clean up their act.

Until now. HEAL Utah is pleased to invite you to our July Community Night, a special strategy session devoted to prepare for a one-time only public hearing where you can make your voice heard, and put the pressure on Rocky Mountain Power to move in a cleaner, greener direction. This exciting Community Night, “How To Become a Rocky Mountain Rabble-Rouser,” is this coming Wednesday, July 20, at 6 p.m. (Details below.) We then hope that some of you, newly equipped, will then be able to attend Rocky Mountain Power’s rate case hearing the following week, at 5 p.m. - July 28. (Details below.)

That hearing is when Utahns have the opportunity – which precious few of us exercise – to let the company know what we think of its request for the largest rate hike in its history, mostly focused on its aging coal fleet. The utility is seeking a massive $232 million increase that if approved by state utility regulators would raise the typical Utah homeowner’s payment by nearly 14 percent, or $120 a year.

Here’s what troubles us most about that rate hike increase – much of that money will go to retrofit outdated, polluting coal plants. Rocky Mountain Power wants to spend tens of millions of our money to put expensive pollution controls on dirty coal plants which darken our skies and sicken our children.

That’s bad news – but the good news is that this is our chance, as empowered citizens, to let them know we demand they go in a different direction. That it’s time to lay the groundwork to transition Utah’s old and dirty coal plants to renewable energy, not sign up for billions of dollars of retrofits. It’s time to take that same investment and put it toward renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Salt Lake County Animal Services will be celebrating Independence Day with $17.76 dog adoptions and FREE cat adoptions through the entire month of July!

“The summer months are our busiest time of the year with many animals coming into the shelter” says Shawni Larrabee, Director of Salt Lake County Animal Services. “July brings special challenges with very large numbers of pets ending up in shelters when they become frightened by fireworks. We want to bring attention to both shelter adoptions as well as encourage pet owners to take special care to keep their pets safe during the summer holidays.”

If you were thinking about adopting a pet this summer NOW is the time!!!

All adoptions include sterilization, microchip and vaccinations. The $17.76 Dog Adoption special will run through July 30th. The Free Cat Adoption program is year round.

REEL Stories, Spy Hop’s Youth Documentary Workshop, is an intensive program that gives Utah high school students the opportunity to work with some of the country’s best documentary filmmakers. Past pieces have explored issues such a male body image, mental illness, the meaning of femininity, and the process of coming of age in different cultures. All the Reel Stories shorts are screened free to the community upon completion. The screening provides a wonderful opportunity to see the talent and creativity alive in our local youth community.

Utah Symphony | Utah Opera offers free concert at The Gallivan Center in recognition of support from the RDA.

Utah Symphony | Utah Opera is partnering with the newly renovated Gallivan Center and Utah Lyric Opera to present a free performance on the plaza featuring the Utah Symphony and several locally-based opera singers, July 14 at 7 p.m.

The Utah Symphony will be led by Associate Conductor David Cho with guest artists Melinda Ammons, Darrell Babidge, Millinee Bannister, Christopher Holmes, Isaac Hurtado, Chad Millar and nationally-renowned soprano Jennifer Welch-Babidge. Together they will perform a variety of orchestral highlights and scenes from popular operas such as “Die Fledermaus,” “La Boheme,” “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Carmen” and “The Barber of Seville.”

As part of the Gallivan Center’s new season of summer events, this performance will give attendees a look at the plaza’s renovations, including a relocated ice skating rink with a state-of-the-art chilling system, an expansion of the amphitheater viewing area, and the addition of a new multi-purpose building along 200 South. This new building will contain ice rink services, a concession stand, permanent restroom facilities and a second floor, glass-enclosed space for parties, meetings, weddings and other private events.

The concert is also being offered in recognition of the Redevelopment Agency (RDA) of Salt Lake City and its support of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera.

In the fall of 2003, the Utah Opera Production Studios (336 N. 400 W.) reopened after extensive expansion and remodeling funded in part by the Salt Lake City RDA. The Production Studios – which houses Utah Opera’s costume shop, scenic shop, rehearsal facilities, coaching studios, dance studio and administrative offices – have since been able to support better production capabilities, better communications and efficiency among staff, and expansion of Utah Opera’s set and costume rental enterprises.

The facility also serves as a gathering place for community groups and other non-profits, and allows Utah Symphony | Utah Opera to rehearse and prepare for its extensive educational and outreach programs that serve the community at large.

No tickets are necessary for this free event.

Public Hearings for Millcreek Incorporation Feasibility Study

Salt Lake County Council has accepted the Millcreek Incorporation Feasibility Study, and set two meetings to present the study’s findings to the public and gather feedback.

The full study is available on the Mayor’s Office website at: mayor.slco.org. The site also contains more information about the incorporation process: mayor.slco.org.

In January, Salt Lake County certified a petition from residents of the Millcreek Township for an incorporation feasibility study. The petition, which required signatures of owners of 10% of the property in the area, called for a feasibility study to consider incorporation. The petition was certified by the Salt Lake County Clerk’s Office.

As required by state statute, Salt Lake County then hired a consultant, Lewis, Young, Robertson & Burningham, to conduct a feasibility study of the incorporation plans. The consultant had 90 days to complete the study.

The study concluded that incorporation is feasible, but would result in significant negative fiscal impacts to Salt Lake County’s Municipal Services Budget.

After the two public hearings to present the study’s findings and hear from residents, incorporation proponents must then determine whether to proceed with the process. They would have 18 months to acquire signatures representing one third of the value of land and one third of the land area in the township. If that requirement is met, the final step to incorporation would be a vote during either a statewide primary or general election to determine city status.

“I support self determination for the people of Millcreek, either by remaining unincorporated residents or creating a new city,” said Mayor Peter Corroon. “It is clear, however, that the study shows regional services are more efficient and cost effective. I have long believed that providing services on a regional basis will help control government spending, create excellent local services and provide wider options for future growth.”

Millcreek Township is bounded by Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, Murray and Holladay cities and on the east by Millcreek Canyon. The Township’s 65,000 residents live in four communities: Millcreek, Canyon Rim, East Mill Creek and Mount Olympus.

Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City and Utah Open Lands today will celebrate the partnership that preserved 265 acres of land on the edge of Utah’s largest metropolitan area.

This morning the partners will formally dedicate the Killyon Canyon Conservation Preserve. Following a three-year acquisition campaign led by Utah Open Lands, the property was officially set aside on December 22, 2010.

“This amazing place deserves permanent protections. It is an incredible mix of landscapes on one piece of property,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon. “The County is proud to be the new landowner and a key participant in this partnership.”

The Killyon Canyon Conservation Preserve is one of the highest leveraged open space projects in which the County Open Space Trust Fund participated.

“Public stewardship of this land is part of what makes our community a vibrant and sustainable place to live,” added Mayor Corroon.” The Salt Lake County Open Space Trust Fund contributed $900,000 to the project.

As part of the permanent preservation a conservation easement was granted to be co-held by Salt Lake City and Utah Open Lands. Salt Lake City contributed $300,000 to the total purchase price. Utah Open Lands raised another $600,000. Utah Open Lands’ portion included a half of a million dollars from an anonymous donor, a donation from the Wasatch Mountain Club and $100,000 from Utah’s LeRay McAllister Critical Lands Conservation Fund.

“Salt Lake City is committed to clean water for our residents,” said Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker. “Our participation in the Killyon Canyon partnership reflects our responsibility to help protect this portion of the Salt Lake Valley Watershed.”

City Council Member J.T. Martin was a strong supporter of the project which gets daily use and enjoyment from city residents even though it’s outside the city limits.

“Utah Open Lands really made this happen from the initial discussions with my family and the other landowner,” said Tracy Burton, former Killyon Canyon landowner. “It says a lot about Utah Open Lands that they raised the money and put the partnership together.”

The Burton property had subdivision rights dating back to the early 1900s. The family’s decision to seek a conservation solution for the property led them and the other landowner Tom Johnson to make a contribution of land value totaling more than $500,000.

Those celebrating the dedication on Wednesday will be treated to a hike with the landowners and Utah Open Lands Stewardship Director Dr. Arthur Morris.

Draper Senior Center

Salt Lake County broke ground on a new, 20,000 square-foot Draper Senior Center Tuesday morning, June 7th.

The new Senior Center will provide services to area citizens who are over the age of 60 by offering a daily nutritious meal, exercise equipment and classes, computer training, educational classes, outdoor walking paths, gardening areas, arts and crafts space, volunteer opportunities, socialization and transportation. The new center is designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold building standards.

“We are excited to provide this first-class facility to ensure that seniors living in Draper and the surrounding areas have options and opportunities to remain healthy, active and engaged in the community,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon.

Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon was joined by officials from Draper City and Aging Services at the groundbreaking at 1136 East Pioneer Road (12400 South).

Salt Lake County Aging Services is responsible for providing programs and services on behalf of the residents of Salt Lake County who are age 60 or older and their caregivers.

The UMFA receives highest national recognition during 10th Anniversary of Marcia and John Price Museum Building.

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) has been granted reaccreditation from the American Association of Museums (AAM). Accreditation is the highest national recognition a museum can receive. This reaccreditation coincides with the UMFA’s tenth anniversary of operation in the award-winning Marcia and John Price Museum Building, and is indicative of the museum’s commitment to excellence over the past decade.

AAM Accreditation:
Developed and sustained by museum professionals for 40 years, AAM’s museum accreditation program is the field’s primary means of quality assurance, self-regulation, and public accountability. Awarded after a rigorous, multi-year examination process, accreditation recognizes a museum for its commitment to excellence in the areas of governance, collections stewardship, public programs, financial stability, high professional standards, and continued institutional improvement.

In 1972 the UMFA was the first university museum west of the Mississippi to receive accreditation after the program began in 1971. Reaccreditation has occurred every ten years, and the Museum began a self-study in 2008 to examine every aspect of its operations in preparation for reaccreditation in 2011.

Of the nation’s estimated 17,500 museums, 775 are currently accredited. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is one of only five accredited museums in Utah, and one of only two accredited museums in Salt Lake City, according the AAM website.

“Accreditation assures the people of Salt Lake City that their museum is among the finest in the nation,” said Ford W. Bell, president of AAM. “As a result, the citizens can take considerable pride in their homegrown institution, for its commitment to excellence and for the value it brings to the community.”

10th Anniversary of the Marcia and John Price Museum Building:
The UMFA’s reaccreditation coincides with the tenth anniversary of the award-winning Marcia and John Price Museum Building, which officially opened to the public on June 2, 2001.

“Over the past decade it has been a pleasure to see the beautiful UMFA grow in stature and begin to fulfill its promise,” says benefactor Marcia Price. “It has been a privilege to work with the University, the Director, and the fine staff and board to continually meet new goals of excellence.”

Made possible by generous private gifts, including a leadership gift by Ambassador John Price and Mrs. Marcia Price, the 74,000 square-foot building has enabled the UMFA to facilitate meaningful connections between hundreds of thousands of museum visitors and the world of art, making a variety of exhibitions, programs, and collections accessible to Utah’s diverse communities.

Special Exhibitions:
The UMFA has presented dozens of special exhibitions over the last decade. Among marquee exhibitions are: Rodin: Sculpture from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collection (2001); Dresses for Humanity (2001); Athletes in Antiquity: Works from the Collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum (2002); Edward Hopper and Urban Realism (2003); Travels in Time and Space: The Art of Robert Sabuda (2006); Dream America: Prints by Andy Warhol (2007); Monet to Picasso from the Cleveland Museum of Art (2008); Splendid Heritage: Perspectives on American Indian Art (2009); salt (series premier 2010); and The Smithson Effect (2011). The UMFA will open its next major exhibition, LeConte Stewart: Depression-Era Art, in July 2011.

Public Programs:
The UMFA serves as a teaching, learning, and research resource for the University of Utah and the broader community, providing engaging public programs to encourage dialogue and discovery. In the last ten years, the UMFA’s public programming reach has grown exponentially. In addition to hosting educational lectures, tours, films, and artist talks on-site, the UMFA created its groundbreaking Art in a Box program in 2004 to provide in-classroom visual arts education to schoolchildren throughout the state. Since its inception, Art in a Box has served over 51,000 students and teachers in Utah.

Collections:
The Marcia and John Price Museum Building houses the UMFA’s permanent collection of over 18,000 art objects from around the world. The collection, which spans over 5,000 years of human creativity, gives visitors the opportunity to experience different ideas, values, and cultures all year round. In 2010 the UMFA launched a comprehensive database to provide online visitors with access to all objects in the UMFA’s permanent collection (www.collections.umfa.utah.edu).

Program for Shelter Adoptions

Salt Lake County Animal Services announces new "Satisfaction Guaranteed" program for pets adopted from the county shelter.

“We are very excited about our new Satisfaction Guaranteed program for adopted pets," says Shawni Larrabee, Director of Salt Lake County Animal Services. "While there is a person for every animal, we know that not every animal is for every person. If you adopt an animal from Salt Lake County Animal Services and discover that you are not compatible with the pet you chose, you may return the pet within the first six months and recieve a credit toward a second adoption or a refund of the adoption fee."

Any pets adopted from the county shelter may be returned within the first 6 months for either a full refund of the adoption fee or a credit toward adopting a different pet.

"We encourage everyone to make careful choices when choosing a new pet and to make every effort to help their new pet adjust to the new family and home. However, if it simply isn't working out then we want to help solve the problem, " says Larrabee. "When a pet is returned we will immediately begin looking for a better match for both the adopter and the returned pet."

Salt Lake County Animal Services recieved funding through the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to implement the program and track the results.

Salt Lake County Animal Services serves the citizens in the Unincorporated Township Areas, Salt Lake City, Herriman City and Holladay City.

Record-Setting Snowfall Has Resort’s Sights Set on 202-Day Season.

Thanks to a record-breaking snow year, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is aiming to extend weekend winter operations through the Fourth of July, conditions permitting. This would mark the third time in the resort’s 40-year history the season has closed on July 4, matching the 1995 and 2005 record. The extension would also mark 202 days of skiing at Snowbird this season, surpassing the 2005 record of 201 ski days.

“Most people who have seen how much snow is still up here know this was an easy call, but it's still very exciting for our guests who started skiing in November and will still be on the slopes in July,” said Dave Fields, Vice President of Resort Operations.

As of May 26th, the resort has received a year-to-date total of 760 inches of snowfall, beating the average annual snowfall by 260 inches, and breaking the previous snowfall record set in 1984 by 72 inches. This season’s total snowfall, roughly 63 feet, is nearly 10 times taller than NBA star LeBron James. Currently, the mid-mountain snowpack stands at 177 inches deep.

The Little Cottonwood Canyon resort will remain open for skiing and riding on weekends (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, as well as the Fourth of July) from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., so long as conditions and weather permit. Snowbird recommends skiing and riding for advanced to expert ability levels. Conditions will be re-evaluated continuously, with updates on snowbird.com. Tickets will be sold at the reduced rate of $64.

To commemorate the occasion, Snowbird is holding a T-shirt design contest. The winner of the contest will have their design printed on an anticipated 1,000 shirts to be sold at the resort on the Fourth of July weekend. The winner will also receive a Spring Season Pass to Snowbird for the 2011-2012 season. Submissions must be sent to info@snowbird.com, by June 17, in vector format.

A special Father’s Day barbecue will take place on Sunday, June 19. Summer activities are anticipated to kick off on June 18 (weather permitting).

Animal shelter given high regards for going the extra mile for homeless pets.

Salt Lake County Animal Services will be receiving a 2011 Utah’s Best of State Medal Award for work and achievements in the Community Development Category. This is the second year in a row that the agency has earned the award.

“It is an honor to receive this recognition by the Best of State committee” says Shawni Larrabee, Director of Salt Lake County Animal Services. “This is often a tough job and this type of recognition is greatly appreciated by the staff, volunteers and community partners that have dedicated themselves to changing the fate of lost and abandoned pets entering the county shelter.”

“Life saving programs for pets entering the Salt Lake County shelter has resulted in a reduction in the euthanasia rate to less than half the rate of the rest of the state” says Larrabee. These programs include FREE Cat Adoptions, the Salt Lake County Pit Crew and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program for community cats. “These programs have shown a significant impact on increasing the live release rate at the shelter as well as promoting proactive, long term solutions to pet related issues. We have even more exciting things coming in 2011/2012,” says Larrabee.

Larrabee says that SLCo Animal Services takes pride in developing strong relationships with local volunteers, shelters, groups and rescues as well as large national organizations. “These relationships are critical to our efforts, and the response from the community has been amazing.”

The Best of State Awards were created in 2003 to recognize outstanding individuals, organizations and businesses in Utah. Best of State candidates are evaluated by a panel of 100 judges based on three criteria: achievement in the field of endeavor; innovation or creativity in approaches, techniques, methods or processes; and contribution to improving the quality of life in Utah.

Small locally owned businesses provide economic stability and visual anchors for our communities, and successful neighborhood business districts provide identity, vitality, and a sense of place for residents. As part of Salt Lake City’s efforts to promote and strengthen these areas, $10,000 has been allocated to be used to match funds raised by selected Salt Lake City Neighborhood Business Districts. The amount available for each project will not exceed $2,000 and will depend on the number and strength of eligible proposals submitted. Funds must be used for promotional events, marketing and branding initiatives, and/or beautification projects.

Deadline for project submissions is June 10th, 2011 by 5:00 pm. Local chefs team with traditionally trained experts for the 2nd Annual "Around the World in Seven Days" Refugee Awareness Campaign and Fundraiser June 10-17.

Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and Park City Mayor Dana Williams invites residents to dine at various local restaurants and sample dishes that are inspired by refugees’ countries. The Second Annual Around the World in Seven Days: Refugee Awareness Campaign and Fundraiser is scheduled to run from June 10th to June 17th.

Restaurants around town will offer a dish created by each restaurant; chef and a refugee community leader with the intent to fuse the traditional flavors of the refugee’s homeland with the chef’s creative style to capture the flavors of both worlds. Proceeds from the entrees will benefit the Utah Refugee Coalition. Around the World in Seven Days is part of a month long refugee celebration and awareness campaign.

Utah is home to approximately 30,000 refugees with nearly 1,200 arriving each year directly from camps and many more as secondary migrants from original resettlement locations. Each has navigated through an overwhelming system to become one of the less than a fraction of one percent that attains resettlement. Each brings with them rich cultures and traditions from regions around the world. To celebrate their diverse gifts to the Utah community, the following restaurants are participating in Around the World in Seven Days:

Volunteers Needed To Fill Sandbags on Saturday; New Sandbagging Machine Up and Running.

Preparations continue for heavy snowmelt sure to come later this month. Salt Lake County is asking for volunteers to help fill sand bags at the Salt Lake County Public Works Administration Building Saturday morning.

Salt Lake County has taken delivery on its new sandbagging machine, but that doesn’t lessen the need for volunteers to help.

“We hope to fill upwards of 5,000 bags on Saturday,” says Sheryl Ivey, the County’s Volunteer Coordinator. “So, we can always use more volunteers.”

Ms. Ivey hopes to have upwards of 200 volunteers for the event.

David Hodges has joined the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company team as the organization’s PR/Marketing Director. David’s work in arts organizations has centered on audience development, both as the former Curator/Artistic Director at Duluth Art Institute in Duluth, MN and at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN where he was in charge of Visitor Services during that institution’s major remodel /construction and reopening in 2005.

David, who left Salt Lake in 1992 to pursue his career, says of his return, “It’s wonderful to see the phenomenal growth and development that has occurred in Salt Lake over the past couple of decades – especially in the arts. Spend a week discovering what it takes to be a bird expert. From ornithologists studying wild birds the world over to talented keepers at Tracy Aviary, campers will experience first-hand what it is like to be one of these bird professionals. We will start life lists while learning how to be birders, make dummy eggs and enrichment for birds just like zoo keepers, explore the Aviary with active games and create fun crafts to take home. You may come as a camper, but you'll leave an expert!

Birds and Beyond

Master the elements in this week-long camp exploring how birds interact with the natural forces in their environment. Verdi's "Falstaff"

Utah Opera will present a classic comedy, Verdi’s “Falstaff,” at the Capitol Theatre on May 16, 18 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. and May 22 at 2:00 p.m.

Verdi’s opera follows Falstaff, a saucy womanizer who, seeking to better his own fortunes, attempts to woo two wealthy matrons, and gets his comeuppance at the hands of those he first sought to trick. Verdi's voice finds its most brilliant expression in this delightful comedy.

The character Falstaff made his first appearance in Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” history plays, and quickly became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. Verdi’s “Falstaff” employs the memorable character to incite a comedic plot taken from another of the Bard’s classic plays, “The Merry Wives of Windsor.”

Cast members include Steven Condy as Falstaff, Cynthia Clayton as Alice, Michael Chioldi as Ford and Aaron Blake as Fenton, Directed by Christopher Mattaliano. The Utah Symphony will accompany each performance, conducted by Robert Tweten. The opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles.

With two twenty-minute intermissions, approximate final curtain time will be 10:15 p.m. for evening performances and 4:45 p.m. for the matinee.

Utah Opera Principal Coach Carol Anderson will offer an Opera Prelude Lecture, free of charge, in the orchestra seating level of Capitol Theatre one hour before curtain of each performance.

Utah Opera Artistic Director Christopher McBeth will hold a Q&A session, free of charge, immediately following each performance in the Founders room on the mezzanine level at Capitol Theatre (50 West 200 South).

SYNOPSIS:

ACT I - Sir John Falstaff, the portly rascal of Windsor, sits in the Garter Inn with his “bad companions” Bardolfo and Pistola. When Dr. Caius enters to accuse the three of abusing his home and robbing him, Falstaff dismisses the charges with mock solemnity. He then up braids his friends for being unable to pay the bill. Seeking to better his fortunes, Falstaff plans to woo wealthy matrons Alice Ford and Meg Page. He produces love letters to both, but his henchmen decide their ethics forbid them from delivering the notes. Falstaff gives them to a page boy instead and lectures his cronies on honor as he chases them from the inn. In her garden, Alice and her daughter, Nannetta, talk to Meg and Dame Quickly, soon discovering that Falstaff has sent identical letters. Outraged, they resolve to punish him, then withdraw as Ford arrives with Caius, Fenton, Bardolfo and Pistola, all warning him about Falstaff’s designs. Briefly alone, Nannetta and Fenton steal kisses until the women return, plotting to send Quickly to Falstaff to arrange a rendezvous with Alice. Next Nannetta and Fenton are interrupted by Ford, who also plans to visit Falstaff. As the women reappear, all pledge to take the fat knight down a peg or two.

ACT II - At the inn, Falstaff accepts Bardolfo and Pistola’s feigned penitence for their mutiny. Soon Quickly curtseys in to assure the knight that both Alice and Meg return his ardor. Arranging a meeting with Alice, Falstaff rewards Quickly with a pittance and then, alone, preens himself. The next visitor is Ford, disguised as “Master Brook” and pretending an unrequited passion for Alice. Employed to break down the lady’s virtue, Falstaff boasts that he already has set up a tryst and steps out to array himself. Ford, unable to believe his ears, vows to avenge his honor. Regaining his composure when Falstaff returns, he leaves arm in arm with the fat knight. In Ford’s house, Quickly tells Alice and Meg about her visit with the knight at the inn. Nannetta does not share in the fun: her father has promised her to Caius. The women reassure her before hiding, except for Alice, who sits strumming a lute as her fat suitor arrives. Recalling his salad days as a slender page, he is cut short when Quickly announces Meg’s imminent approach. Falstaff leaps behind a screen, and Meg sails in to report that Ford is on his way over in a fury. Quickly confirms this, and while Ford and his men search the house, Falstaff takes refuge amid the dirty linen in a laundry basket. Slipping behind a screen, Nannetta and Fenton attract attention with the sound of their kissing. While Meg and Quickly muffle Falstaff’s cries for air, Ford sneaks up on the screen, knocks it over and pauses briefly to berate the lovers as the chase continues upstairs. Alice orders servants to heave the basket into the Thames, and then leads her husband to the window to see Falstaff dumped into the muddy river.

ACT III - At sunset outside the inn, Falstaff bemoans his misadventure while downing a mug of warm wine. His reflections are halted by Quickly, who insists that Alice still loves him and proves it with a note appointing a midnight rendezvous in Windsor Park. Alice, Ford, Meg, Caius and Fenton sneak in as Falstaff enters the inn with Quickly, who tells him the gory tale of the Black Huntsman’s ghost, often seen in Windsor Park at midnight. Alice and the others take up the story, plotting to frighten Falstaff by dressing up as wood sprites. Everyone takes off as Falstaff lumbers in, got up as a huntsman and wearing antlers. Scarcely has he greeted Alice than Meg warns of approaching demons. As the knight cowers, Nannetta calls the forest creatures to their revels. They torment Falstaff until he begs for mercy. When the conspirators unmask, Sir John takes it like a sport. Ford betrothes Caius to the queen of the fairies (now Bardolfo in disguise) and unwittingly blesses Nannetta and Fenton. Ford too has been duped, but he can forgive as well, and Falstaff leads the company in declaring the world is but a jest.

This Morning

Volunteers are needed this morning, May 14, to fill sandbags to help prepare for the expected heavy spring runoff. The event will be held at the Salt Lake County Public Works Administration Building.

Volunteers will use a process that includes a horizontal ladder with traffic cones acting as funnels. Sand is shoveled into the large end of the cone, funneling sand into empty bags.

“This process worked well last Saturday,” says SLCo Volunteer Coordinator Sheryl Ivey. “We need volunteers to reach our goal of 5,000 sand bags filled.”

Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and shovels; or 5-gallon buckets.

Patrick Leary, Associate Director of Administrative Services for Salt Lake County, has been tapped to take over Salt Lake County’s Department of Public Works. The appointment was effective May 1, 2011, subject to approval of the Salt Lake County Council.

Leary succeeds Linda Hamilton, named by Mayor Peter Corroon as the County’s Chief Administrative Officer.

“Patrick is a proven leader,” says Mayor Corroon. “I look forward to him administering the same kind of responsive, energetic government operation in the Department of Public Works.”

Mr. Leary will direct, administer and coordinate the activities of the Divisions in the Department, including: Planning and Development Services, Operations, Engineering and Flood Control, Sanitation and Solid Waste Management.

“I’m honored at this chance to work with the tremendous staff assembled in the Public Works Department,” says Leary. “I look forward to the challenge.”

Mr. Leary has almost 20 years of experience working in local government including the Office of the District Attorney and the Salt Lake County Clerk’s Office and currently serves as the Associate Director for the Department of Administrative Services in Salt Lake County. The Department oversees the support services function for 7,000+ fulltime, seasonal and part-time employees.

Mr. Leary is completing a Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Utah. He completed his undergraduate work at Utah State University.

Leary joins April Townsend (Administrative Services), Erin Litvack (Community Services), Dale Carpenter (Economic Development) and Jean Nielsen (Human Services) as department directors in the Corroon administration.

The Utah Symphony welcomes Mormon Tabernacle Choir organist Richard Elliott to Abravanel Hall, only a stone’s throw from his home performance venue, for an anticipated concert of the most iconic and commonly performed work for organ and orchestra – Saint-Saëns’ “Organ Symphony.”

Elliott will also perform Poulenc’s organ concerto with the Utah Symphony under the direction of promising young American conductor Andrew Grams, Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 at 8 p.m. in the hall (123 West South Temple).

The haunting beauty and simplified instrumentation of Poulenc’s organ concerto, featuring a string orchestra and timpani as accompaniment, will serve as a delicate pairing with Saint-Saëns’ dynamic and powerful “Organ Symphony,” featuring virtuosic piano passages, a musical style characteristic of the Romantic period and the stately presence of a large pipe organ. Also on the program is “Scherzo Fantastique,” an early work by Igor Stravinsky.

On Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m. the general public is invited to attend a Finishing Touches dress rehearsal, where audience members can witness the diligence and dedication that goes into rehearsing for each performance. Tickets for the rehearsal are $15.

Grams and Toby Tolokan, Utah Symphony Vice President of Artistic Planning, will present a free pre-concert lecture each night, 45 minutes prior to the start of the performance in the First Tier Room of Abravanel Hall.

Andrew Grams, Conductor
As one of America’s most promising and talented young conductors, Andrew Grams has already appeared with many of the great orchestras of the world including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington D.C., and the orchestras of Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, New Jersey and others in the United States. On the international arena, he has conducted the Montreal Symphony, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Melbourne Symphony, the Orchestra of Santa Cecilia Rome, the Residentie Orchestra of the Hague, the Hamburg Symphony, and the Malmo Symphony to name a few.

Maestro Grams was a protégé of Franz Welser-Moest and served as Assistant Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra from 2004 to 2007.

The 2010-11 season witnesses a major debut for Grams with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London alongside debut appearances with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Beethovenhalle Bonn. Grams returns to the podium with the Residentie Orchestra several times this year as well and also makes welcome repeat visits with the Hamburg Symphony, the Malmo Symphony, the National Arts Centre Orchestra Ottawa and the Utah Symphony.

A Maryland native raised in Severn, Andrew Grams began conducting at the age of 17, when he directed the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. In 1999 he received a bachelor of music degree in violin performance from the Juilliard School, and in 2003 he received a conducting degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, where he worked with Otto-Werner Mueller. Also an accomplished violinist, Mr. Grams was a member of the New York City Ballet Orchestra at Lincoln Center from 1998 to 2004, serving as acting associate principal second violin in 2002 and 2004. In addition, he has performed with ensembles including the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and the New Jersey Symphony.

Richard Elliott, Organ
Richard Elliott is right at home at the massive console of the Tabernacle organ, having previously served as an assistant organist for the world's largest functioning pipe organ in Philadelphia's Lord and Taylor (formerly John Wanamaker) department store. His background in jazz and popular music has likewise prepared him well for his role as accompanist for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, with its broad range of repertoire.

As Principal Tabernacle Organist, Elliott performs, tours and records with the Choir. He also plays for the weekly Music and the Spoken Word broadcasts and joins with his fellow organists in presenting daily 30- minute organ recitals in the Tabernacle. He works alongside the rest of the Choir's musical staff to ensure perfect balance among the singers' voices, the organ and the Orchestra at Temple Square, thus producing the Choir's signature sound. In addition, Elliott performs widely as an organ recitalist and has recorded on the Tabernacle organ for several record labels.

Prior to his appointment in 1991 as a Tabernacle organist, Elliott was an Assistant Professor at Brigham Young University, where he taught courses in organ and music appreciation. His early musical studies were undertaken at the Peabody Conservatory and the Catholic University of America. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the famed Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and later received Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

Elliott is a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and was a featured performer in the Guild's national convention held in 1992 in Atlanta. He is a published composer and has also written articles for several music journals. Elliott currently sits on the advisory boards for the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ and for the Eccles Organ Festival at Salt Lake's Cathedral of the Madeleine.

Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort hit a 40-year all time record for single season snowfall Saturday morning(April 30), reaching the 711-inch mark thanks to spring storms. Snowbird’s previous single season official record was 688 inches, set in the 1983-84 season. The resort’s mid-mountain base currently stands at 190+ inches.

“This has been a remarkable season for Snowbird,” said resort president Bob Bonar. “We’ll be celebrating with skiing til Memorial Day and most likely beyond, with conditions that are anything but typical spring skiing.”

711 inches measures nearly the height of each sculpture face at the Mount Rushmore National Monument, more than a third of the height of the Statue of Liberty, and easily tops Utah’s Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. This is the fourth consecutive season Snowbird has topped 600 inches mid-mountain, with water content in this year’s snowfall well exceeding record levels. The latest closing date in the history of the Little Cottonwood Canyon resort is July 4 (in 1995 and 2005).

“Having skied at Snowbird for 16 years, I can honestly say this is by far the best year of powder skiing I’ve ever experienced,” said local pro athlete Ben Wheeler. “The mountain is incredibly filled in, with areas that used to be 30-foot cliffs completely buried under all this snow.”

HCT’s 2012 season to feature U.S. Premiere of “Zorro-The Musical,” Utah Premiere of “The Games's Afoot.” Premieres to be Complemented by “9 to 5: The Musical,” “The Sound of Music,” “Father of the Bride,” and “Oliver!”

Hale Centre Theatre (HCT), Utah’s premiere family theatre, announced its 2012 season schedule, which includes the United States premiere of “Zorro-The Musical.” The production is one of the first U.S. musical premieres in the state’s history. The producers of “Zorro” traveled to West Valley in March 2011 to meet with HCT and tour the facilities before selecting the theatre for the show’s U.S. premiere.

Additionally, Tony Award-winning author Ken Ludwig has granted HCT the Utah premiere of “The Game’s Afoot.” This is the third premiere of a Ludwig production by HCT (“The Three Musketeers,” 2010, and “Treasure Island,” 2009).

The 2012 lineup also includes the full musical version of Dolly Parton’s iconic film “9 to 5,” along with “Father of the Bride,” “The Sound of Music,” “Oliver!,” and the 28th annual performance of “A Christmas Carol.” The following is more information on each production:

“The Game’s Afoot,” Dec. 31, 2011 - Feb. 4, 2012
Utah Premiere
Marking HCT’s fifth production from Tony Award-winning author Ken Ludwig, “The Game’s Afoot” will make its Utah premiere on New Year’s Eve. Set in 1936, the story follows acclaimed actor William Gillette, who invites his “Sherlock Holmes” co-stars to his Connecticut mansion for a holiday celebration. After one of the guests is murdered, Gillette employs the persona of the master detective he’s made famous on the stage to solve the mystery.

“Zorro-The Musical,” Feb. 15 - April 11
U.S. Premiere
Earning critical acclaim in its debut in London’s West End and in subsequent productions in Moscow, Tokyo, and Amsterdam, the fiery musical features music from the Gipsy Kings, authentic Flamenco dancing, Spanish guitar, illusion, mystique and romance. The musical is based on the 2005 biography “Zorro,” written by Isabel Allende. It is prequel to the events of the original Zorro story and features numerous references to other Zorro works, including the 1998 film “The Mask of Zorro.”

“Father of the Bride,” April 17 - May 26
First performed on HCT’s center stage in 1993, “Father of the Bride” returns by audience request. Caroline Francke’s comedy follows a daughter’s surprise engagement and resulting wedding planning that nearly break her father’s will and bank account.

“The Sound of Music,” June 6 - Aug. 4
Winner of five Tony Awards, Rogers and Hammerstein’s classic musical “The Sound of Music” is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp. The time-honored score includes standards “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Every Mountain.” HCT’s version will feature innovative direction, staging and costumes.

“9 to 5: The Musical,” Aug. 15 - Sept. 29
Fresh from Broadway, Dolly Parton’s Tony Award-nominated “9 to 5: The Musical” is a remake of the iconic movie. Three female employees, tired of banging their heads against a low-hanging glass ceiling, team up against their boss in this nostalgic story. The show shines with Parton’s straight-from-the-heart ballads and wistful melodies.

“Oliver!,” Oct. 10 - Dec. 1
A classic musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ treasured “Oliver Twist,” the story follows an orphan who runs away and joins a group of boys trained as pickpockets. With heart-tugging music like “Where is Love” and “As Long as He Needs Me,” “Oliver!” earned three Tony Awards and critical success during its run on Broadway.

“A Christmas Carol,” Dec. 8 - Dec. 22
HCT’s nationally acclaimed Christmas tradition, adapted by Richard Wilkins and Barlow Bradford, will mark its 28th annual production in 2012. Marley’s Ghost reminds the stingy mercenary, Ebenezer Scrooge, that “mankind should be his business.” Dickens’ carol of redemption seeks to reclaim Scrooge’s heart.

Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest Accepts Latest Snowbird Master Development Plan Proposal For Further Study.

The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest Service recently announced that it has accepted Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort’s updated Master Development Plan (MDP) proposal. Snowbird’s MDP is a detailed document that outlines short- and long-term resort development plans, including the potential to modify Snowbird’s skiing boundaries in Utah County, outside Salt Lake City’s watershed area

“The acceptance of our proposal is an exciting step as we plan for the future of providing world-class skiing and snowboarding as well as year-round recreation,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “We look forward to working with the Forest Service and other stakeholders in creating sustainable outdoor recreational opportunities for our community that provide jobs for Utahns, attract tourists to our state and maintain Snowbird’s viability in a competitive marketplace.”

Acceptance of Snowbird’s MDP proposal is the first step in a process involving thorough environmental study and analysis by governmental agencies, engineers, scientists and stakeholders of all aspects and impacts of the proposed projects.

“Whether it was part of the MDP process or Congressman Jim Matheson’s wilderness bill, we have taken input from city, county, state and federal leaders as well as local environmental organizations on many of the proposed improvements,” said Bonar. “We are very encouraged that there is widespread support for watershed-friendly proposals that continue to provide sustainable recreation opportunities in our community.”

The updated MDP Proposal describes potential terrain expansion options to the south of Snowbird’s existing resort area, a majority of which would be on Snowbird’s private property in American Fork Canyon in Utah County and outside of the Salt Lake City Municipal Watershed area. Proposed resort expansion projects include a lower capacity Tram to the top of the American Fork Twin Peaks, a chairlift from Mary Ellen Gulch that would return skiers to the Mineral Basin area of the resort, and an extension of the existing Mineral Basin Express chairlift, improvements that would offer exciting new terrain options for skiers and riders. Snowbird is also considering adding beginner skiing terrain adjacent to the Baby Thunder area, upgrading some existing chairlifts, providing night skiing from the Gadzoom chairlift, an expansion of the Adaptive Sports facilities and a handful of other resort improvements.

Snowbird is not proposing to put ski lifts in the White Pine area, located directly west of the current resort boundary. The Little Cottonwood Canyon resort supports the White Pine area maintaining its backcountry characteristics, and is proposing to work with stakeholders to limit summer and winter access to the area from its proposed Twin Peaks installation. Snowbird is also considering donating its significant private property within the White Pine/Red Pine areas into a conservation easement to help ensure this area maintains its pristine, watershed nature.

“We understand and are sensitive to the concerns of backcountry user groups and local environmental organizations. The top terminal of the proposed tramway to the American Fork Twin Peaks would be positioned in such a manner that it would not be visible from the Salt Lake Valley,” said Bonar. “The expansion area would be accessed from the existing resort footprint.”

Through vigilant work with Salt Lake City Municipal Water and the U.S. Forest Service, Snowbird has maintained superb Little Cottonwood Canyon water quality in its nearly 40 years of operation, including award-winning mine clean-up projects in American Fork Canyon that considerably improved water conditions for the surrounding environment.

“In tandem with this updated MDP, Snowbird pledges to continue to be an active, engaged ally in efforts to protect Little Cottonwood Canyon’s diverse values, support wilderness areas, and protect Salt Lake County’s watershed areas while offering sustainable, managed, year-round recreational opportunities to our community on private and adjacent public lands,” said Bonar.

Snowbird is a two-time recipient of the nation’s highest ski resort environmental honor, the Golden Eagle Award, most recently in 2007 for its mine clean-up efforts in American Fork Canyon. Snowbird was one of the first resorts to partner with and contribute to the National Forest Foundation, which funds public and private partnerships such as the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation and their mission of environmental education, interpretive centers, Tour with a Ranger programs, trail work and outreach programs. Snowbird is also a founding member and continued supporter of the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation, which offers a wide array of preservation and education programs during all seasons in Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons.

Big Budah to Host Utah Symphony Program of Student-Selected Classical Music Favorites.

At the end of February, music students across the state voted on which classical masterworks they would like to see performed by the Utah Symphony.

FOX13 News personality Big Budah will announce the students' top 13 picks, and the Utah Symphony will perform these symphonic favorites under the baton of Associate Conductor David Cho on Tuesday, April 26 in Abravanel Hall at 7 p.m. Utah Symphony | Utah Opera is keeping voting results a secret, so audience members will be the first to find out at this family-friendly performance of some of the most well-known and loved orchestral works of all time.

Utah Symphony education staff, along with other symphony administrators and an orchestra member, began developing a list of repertoire to serve as voting options for the students last November.

“We consulted orchestra directors and high school music teachers, and came up with a long list of pieces we thought would be appealing to high school students,” said Beverly Hawkins, Utah Symphony Education Manager.

The public is invited to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new urban farm in West Valley City. New Roots seeks to build a healthier community through the development of small-scale, urban farms and community gardens in Salt Lake County. This program focuses on the unique skills that many refugees bring from their home countries, which include an agrarian background with extensive farming expertise. The goals of this program are to:
       • Provide communities with access to local, healthy, fresh, affordable and familiar foods. Expand nutrition of refugees.
       • Facilitate self-sufficiency and greater economic independence through market gardening and the direct sale of produce to consumers.
       • Identify, build and foster the strengths of refugee communities.

The public is invited to bring extra garden tools to donate to another gardener in need.

New Roots of Utah is partnership between Salt Lake County, the Utah Refugee Coalition and the International Rescue Committee. Funding for this project comes through the Office of Refugee Resettlement RAPP grant and GE Capital. Land is made available through the Salt Lake County Urban Farming Initiative. We also like to thank the hundreds of individual and businesses who have donated their time and resources in making project possible.

The Utah Refugee Pathways to Self Sufficiency offers refugees the opportunities to earn supplemental income through part-time entrepreneurial activities. Pathways project consists of three divisions:
       • Global Artisans, which produces refugee arts and crafts for retail sales
       • The New Roots of Utah (New Roots), which engages the community in market gardening and direct sales to consumers.
       • The Refugee Kitchen Alliance, which focuses on food ventures.

The Utah Symphony and Music Director Emeritus Keith Lockhart will bring Michael Tippet’s moving oratorio, “A Child of Our Time,” to Abravanel Hall for the first time, Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 at 8 p.m.

The Utah Symphony Chorus and guest vocalists Indra Thomas, Marietta Simpson, Russell Thomas and Derrick Parker will join them in performing this musically versatile work. Tippet’s use of African spirituals and other elements reflective of the large scale works of Bach and Handel support the themes of this musical, political, spiritual and philosophical expression.

Inspired by the harsh anti-Semitic persecution and suffering caused by Nazi Germany’s infamous Kristallnacht, the oratorio reflects Tippet’s pacifism, focusing on Jungian themes and the universality of human oppression.

"The work deals with the general state of oppression in our time,” Tippet said in an essay. “[It] presents the particular story of a young man's attempt to seek justice by violence and the catastrophic consequences."

These performances will not include an intermission, but there will be a short pause to fill late seating after Part I of the oratorio, approximately 25 minutes into the performance. The approximate running time of the complete oratorio is 75 minutes.

Patrons may attend a free pre-concert lecture each night, 45 minutes prior to the start of the performance in the First Tier Room of Abravanel Hall, located at 123 W. South Temple.

Artist Bios:

Keith Lockhart currently serves as Conductor of the Boston Pops and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the summer institute and festival at the Brevard Music Center. He recently completed his highly successful 11-year tenure as Music Director of the Utah Symphony. where his leadership of the symphony allowed him to stand at the front of that organization’s historical merger with the Utah Opera to create the first-ever joint administrative arts entity of the Utah Symphony and Opera. Since the merger, arts institutions nationally and internationally have looked to Maestro Lockhart as an example of an innovative thinker on and off the podium. Lockhart has conducted the Symphony Orchestras of Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Baltimore, Atlanta, St. Louis, Nashville, North Carolina, Indianapolis, Singapore, Toronto and Vancouver as well as the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

Indra Thomas, Soprano
In the 2010-2011 opera season, Ms. Thomas has already performed in the United States a gala concert with the Artist Series of Sarasota, a recital at Weill Hall in New York, and the Verdi Requiem with the Flint Symphony. Internationally she will sing the title role in Aida with Palau de les Arts in Valencia, Spain, and Choregies d’Orange in Orange, France. She will also be singing Chausson’s Poémes de l’amour et de la mer in La Corñua, Spain.

Engagements in the 2009-10 season included performances of the Verdi Requiem in a tour of four cities in Spain with the Euskadi Orchestra under the direction of Andres Orozco Estrada, Britten’s War Requiem with the Orchestra de Paris, and Aida at the Avignon Music Festival and the Bregenz Festival. Engagements in the U.S. included a recital with the Atlanta Opera Guild, a Christmas concert with Little Orchestra Society of New York, the Verdi Requiem with the Vermont Symphony, and a last-minute performance of the title role of Aida with Atlanta Opera.

Marietta Simpson, Mezzo-Soprano
Marietta Simpson has sung with major orchestras throughout the United States and abroad. She made her Carnegie Hall debut as soloist in Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody under Robert Shaw with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and her New York Philharmonic debut under Kurt Masur in Mendelssohn’s Elijah. She has performed Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater under Sir Simon Rattle with both Vienna and Berlin philharmonics, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under Daniel Barenboim with Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Recent highlights include Mahler’s Rückert Lieder (Memphis Symphony Orchestra); Verdi’s Requiem (Louisville Orchestra); Messiah (Detroit Symphony); Mendelssohn’s “Die Erste Walpurgisnacht” and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (Alabama Symphony); a recital at the Kennedy Center; Hindemith’s “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed” (Cathedral Choral Society of Washington DC); Bach’s Cantata No. 78 and Christmas Oratorio (Baldwin-Wallace Bach Festival); Dominga de Adviento in Eotvos’ Love and Other Demons (Glyndebourne Festival Opera, world premiere); Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis (Singing City/Philadelphia); and McCollough’s Let My People Go (Master Chorale of Washington). Russell Thomas, Tenor
Tenor Russell Thomas is quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting vocal and dramatic talents on the international opera and concert scene, most recently as the winner of the prestigious “Viñas Competition” in Barcelona (First Prize, Audience Favorite and Best Tenor).

Russell Thomas’ current season begins with the Duke in Rigoletto in Santiago de Chile, followed by Tamino in The Magic Flute and Andres in Wozzeck at the Metropolitan Opera, Faust in LA Damnation de Faust in Frankfurt, the title-role in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with the Boston Symphony and James Levine, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with the Atlanta Symphony and the Prince in A Flowering Tree with the Cincinnati Opera. Other notable concert appearances include the Mozart Requiem with the Milwaukee Symphony, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Dallas Symphony. Future plans include debuts with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Deutsche Oper, Berlin and the Canadian Opera Company.

Derrick Parker, Bass-Baritone
Derrick Parker has previously sung Tippett’s A Child of Our Time with the Santa Rosa Symphony and Santa Cruz Symphony. In the 2010-11 season, he sings Handel’s Messiah (Memphis Symphony Orchestra) and Bach’s Mass in B Minor (Butler University) as well as returns to Houston Grand Opera for its production of Lucia di Lammermoor. Recent storms push season total to 52.5 feet, 180” mid-mountain base.

April has picked up where last year left off at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort thanks to six feet of snow in the first 10 days of this month. With snow banks piled high and a mid-mountain base depth of 180 inches, Snowbird is half way to matching the 144 inches that fell last April, the snowiest month of the 2009/10 season.

“This past weekend was unquestionably some of the best skiing of the season,” said Snowbird Vice President Dave Fields. “La Nina storms keep lining up for Little Cottonwood, and at this rate we could be topping our snowiest and longest season on record.”

Standing at 631 inches on April 11, Snowbird is fast approaching the record 688-inch mark that was set during the 1983/1984 season. The latest closing date in the history of the Little Cottonwood Canyon resort is July 4 (in 2005). Snowbird plans to offer skiing and riding til Memorial Day Weekend this year and potentially beyond if the impressive snowpack holds. This is the fourth consecutive season Snowbird has topped 600 inches.

April is full of non-skiing activities for young and old, including an Easter Sunrise Service on 11,000-foot Hidden Peak, followed by an Easter Egg Hunt on Chickadee and a special brunch at the Aerie Restaurant (details for the April 24 holiday activities can be found at www.snowbird.com/events/easter.html). Après ski fun includes free live music on the Plaza Deck, Saturday and Sunday afternoons through the end of April (weather permitting) along with daily food and drink specials.

Center-Stage Theatre to Transform into a Jungle Medical Unit for Comedy.

Hale Centre Theatre (HCT), Utah’s premier family theatre, will present 1940s classic play “The Hasty Heart” April 16 through May 28. Blending comedy, romance and drama, the production returns to HCT after being selected as an audience favorite. The theatre’s unique center stage will provide an intimate setting for the play, as actors are confined in the beds of a military medical unit and remain on stage throughout the show.

“It gives you a different feeling to be so close to the actors as they are exposed on stage throughout the play,” said veteran HCT director John Adams. “This show is not a spectacle with moving parts, it’s about people. And seeing it in this format will provide a profound experience for the audience.”

HCT’s center stage will transform into a Burmese jungle medical unit reminiscent of the TV show “M*A*S*H.” Bamboo paths weave between huts and medical buildings that are raised off of the ground as they would have been in World War II to avoid snakes and insects. With veteran HCT actors and some new additions joining the cast, the production leans heavily on strong acting and showcases exceptional local talent.

Written in 1944 and first staged in 1945, “The Hasty Heart” is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright John Patrick’s experiences in an ambulance unit on the Burma front in World War II. The story follows six patients in an English war hospital including Lachlen McLachlen (“Lachie”), a Scottish soldier with one barely functioning kidney and only a few weeks to live. Unaware of the severity of his ailment, Lachie proves to be difficult, abrasive and unfriendly. The other patients and staff attempt to gain his affection, which results in a surprisingly layered tale, less about death and more about how to live and celebrate life.

“The Hasty Heart” ran on Broadway for 204 performances and had an off-Broadway revival in 2004. The 1949 movie version starred Ronald Regan and earned two Golden Globes and an Academy Award nomination. The 1983 TV movie also earned a Golden Globe nomination. Playwright Patrick won a Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for his play “The Teahouse of the August Moon.”

HCT’s “The Hasty Heart” is directed by John Adams. The show stars Rusty Bringhurst and Cameron Asay as Yank; Amy Stocking and Alexis Boss as Margaret; and Jeffrey Whitlock and Magarin Hobson as Lachie. Costumes were designed by Peggy Wilis; scenic design by Kacey Udy; lighting design by Adam Flitton; props by Michelle Jensen; and sound design by Dan Morgan.

Performances are Monday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with matinées each Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. and occasional weekdays at 4 p.m. Ticket prices for Monday through Thursday evenings and matinees are $23 per adult and $15 per child (5-11 years); for Friday and Saturday evening shows tickets are $26 per adult and $16 per child (5-11 years). Under the direction of guest conductor Roberto Minczuk, the Utah Symphony will present an evening of masterworks including Richard Strauss’s “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” which houses one of the most recognizable classical music excerpts used in pop culture today, first made popular by the 1968 science fiction film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Promising young violinist and winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2008, Karen Gomyo will also join the Utah Symphony for Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major during this performance on Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. in Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple.

Also on the program is Johann Strauss Jr.’s most famous work, “On the Beautiful Blue Danube.” His Viennese family of composers shared no relation with Richard Strauss, but was well-respected by the German composer. Coincidence would further connect these two composers in 1968, when excerpts from “The Blue Danube” and “Also sprach Zarathustra” were both used in the memorable soundtrack to “2001: A Space Odyssey.” This Utah Symphony performance will again bring the two composers’ popular works together, and will also include Erich Korngold’s “Much Ado About Nothing” suite.

Roberto Minczuk, Conductor
Conductor Roberto Minczuk is currently in his fifth season as Music Director of the Calgary Philharmonic. He also uniquely holds two concurrent major posts in the city of Rio de Janeiro Brazil - Artistic Director of the Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira and Music Director and Artistic Director of the Opera and Orchestra of the Teatro Municipal Rio de Janeiro.

Until 2005, he served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Sao Paulo State Symphony Orchestra in Brazil – having completed a nine year tenure as Co-Artistic Director of that same orchestra and a two year period as Associate Conductor of the New York Philharmonic.

Maestro Minczuk takes the podium this season for the first time with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony, the Yomiuri-Nippon Symphony Orchestra of Tokyo, and the Odense Symphony as part of the Carl Nielsen International Festival. He makes welcome returns to the Dallas Symphony, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Vancouver Symphony, the Utah Symphony, the Kansas City Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia as part of a Kimmel Center Festival conducting the world premiere of a new Jonathan Sheffer oratorio with Angelique Kidjo as a major soloist.

Minczuk has also conducted the orchestras of Philadelphia, Atlanta, St. Louis, Dallas, Houston, Minnesota, St. Paul, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Toronto, Edmonton, Milwaukee, Nashville, Utah, Ottawa, Columbus, and New Jersey. On the international circuit, Maestro Minczuk has also appeared with (in addition to those above) the Halle Orchestra of Manchester, the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Lyon and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra among many others.

Mr. Minczuk began his career as a prodigy of the French horn and already by the age of sixteen could count among his significant accomplishments the appointment of Principal Hornist of the São Paulo Symphony. While a student at The Juilliard School, he made solo appearances with the New York Youth Symphony at Carnegie Hall and with the New York Philharmonic as part of the orchestra's Young People's Concerts. After his graduation from Juilliard in 1987, Mr. Minczuk became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra at the invitation of Maestro Kurt Masur. Returning to Brazil in 1989, he pursued conducting studies with Eleazar de Carvalho and John Neschling.

Karen Gomyo, Violin
Recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2008, violinist Karen Gomyo first caught public attention after winning the 1997 Young Concert Artists International Auditions at age 15. She has ever since been active as soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician across the North and South America, Europe, and Asia.

Gomyo's engagements as soloist have included those with the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, San Francisco, Saint Louis, Cincinnati, Houston, Montreal and Vancouver Symphonies, and the National Symphony of Washington D.C., to name a few. In Europe she has performed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic, and Den Haag Residentie Orkest, among others. She has worked with such conductors as Leonard Slatkin, Neeme Järvi, Andrew Litton, David Robertson, David Zinman, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Andrey Boreyko, Hans Graf, Louis Langrée, James Gaffigan, and Robin Ticciati.

Upcoming highlights include debuts with the Cleveland Orchestra, Hong-Kong Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, Malaysia Philharmonic, as well as return visits to the Baltimore, Dallas, Toronto, Indianapolis, and Norrköping Symphonies, among others.

Japan’s Nuclear Crisis

Comments by Matt Pacenza, Policy Director:
I’m sure, like us, you’ve been following the disturbing events unfolding in Japan. In just the last two days, we’ve learned that radiation levels 12 miles from the crippled reactors are 1,600 times above normal. Area water and food supplies are now contaminated with radioactive iodine. Today, authorities began recommending that infants in Tokyo, 140 miles south of the reactors, avoid tap water.

Yet, despite this sobering news, there are forces in Utah plowing forward with plans to build nuclear reactors on the Green River. Gov. Herbert released a disappointing energy plan last week which included nuclear power as an option. An official with Blue Castle Holdings, the firm behind the Green River proposal, went on CNN several days after the Japan crisis began and blithely downplayed events saying, “I believe that this is a contained accident."

It’s clearly time to reject nuclear power as part of Utah’s energy future – if you have not done so already, please sign your name to a letter we sent Gov. Herbert urging him to do same.At Community Night, we’ll discuss all of this. We’ll offer a detailed look at what’s happening in Japan and in Utah. We’ll answer your questions, hear your opinions and suggest ways you can add your voice to this critical debate. And, if you know others who might be interested in the nuclear situation in Japan, please feel free to forward this invitation to them. All are welcome!

If you’ve never joined us before, HEAL Community Night is a monthly gathering of people who care about energy and environmental issues in Utah. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) is pleased to present short talks and a panel discussion with leading contemporary artists Matthew Coolidge, San Durant, and Melanie Smith. Work by all three artists is featured in the UMFA’s current exhibition, The Smithson Effect. Coolidge, Durant, and Smith will give presentations describing their interest in artist Robert Smithson (1938-1973) and then participate in a conversation mediated by UMFA Acting Chief Curator Jill Dawsey. This program is FREE and open to the public.

The most ambitious contemporary art exhibition ever organized by the UMFA, The Smithson Effect brings together a broad spectrum of work by twenty-three international artists who have been influenced by Robert Smithson’s art and ideas. Organized by UMFA Acting Chief Curator Jill Dawsey, the exhibition features sculpture, video, photography, installation, and sound art, and occupies over 4,000 square feet in the museum’s first-floor galleries. The Smithson Effect will be on view in the Marcia and John Price Museum Building at the University of Utah through July 3, 2011.

Perhaps the most influential artist of the postwar period, Smithson is best known for his pioneering earthworks created during the 1960s and 70s, such as the famous Spiral Jetty (1970) in Utah’s Great Salt Lake. Smithson’s legacy, however, extends far beyond his revolutionary use of land as an artistic medium. Since the mid-to-late 1990s, significant numbers of artists have turned to Smithson’s work as a source of inspiration, exploring his radical ideas on the subjects of entropy, site and ‘nonsite’, land use, anti-monuments, natural history, and language. Three such artists are Matthew Coolidge, Sam Durant, and Melanie Smith.

About Matthew Coolidge:
Artist Matthew Coolidge is the founder and director of the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI), a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles. CLUI employs a multimedia and multidisciplinary approach to disseminate knowledge about how the world’s lands are apportioned, used, and perceived. It produces exhibitions in collaboration with museums and galleries. Coolidge is the author of Back to the Bay: An Examination of the Shoreline of the San Francisco Bay Area Region (2001) and The Nevada Test Site: A Guide to America’s Nuclear Proving Ground (1996).

The Smithson Effect features a new work by CLUI entitled Salt Lake City International Airport, Northern Approach (2006-2010), which takes the form of a digital slide show of unaltered photographs taken from a commercial airliner as it descends into Salt Lake City. The work takes as inspiration Smithson’s (unrealized) idea for earthworks to be built at the Dallas Fort Worth airport, which would be viewed from airplanes at a low altitude. “These pools, paths, and swaths exist in a scale-less, gossamer fringescape,” explains CLUI, “the evolving outcome of the inextricable interaction between manmade constructions and non-human forces, that needs little more to make it art, than to be seen as such.”

About Sam Durant:
Another Los Angeles-based artist featured in The Smithson Effect is Sam Durant, whose multimedia work engages the relationship between culture and politics, often addressing such diverse subjects as protest movements of the 1960s, Southern rock music, and modernism. He has had solo museum exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Dusseldorf, S.M.A.K., Ghent, Belgium, and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Zealand. His work has been included in the Panamá, Sydney, Venice, and Whitney Biennales, and he was a finalist for the 2008 Hugo Boss Prize. Durant teaches at the California Institute of the Arts.

Three drawings and a sculpture from Durant’s Partially Buried/Altamont series are featured in The Smithson Effect. A key point of reference for Durant is Smithson’s Partially Buried Woodshed (1970), an “anti-monument” created by dumping twenty loads of dirt onto the roof of an abandoned shed until it collapsed.

Durant’s work repeatedly references Smithson’s earthwork, often in combination with allusions to popular music from the same era, as in the sculpture Partially Buried 1960s/70s Dystopia Revealed (Mick Jagger at Altamont) & Utopia Reflected (Wavy Gravy at Woodstock) (1998), composed of mounds of dirt that sit atop rectangular mirrors on the floor. Inside the mounds are speakers, one emitting the voice of folk hero Wavy Gravy at Woodstock in 1969, the other playing audio of Mick Jagger as he tries to calm the crowd at the Altamont Free Concert, the ill-fated event that seemed to symbolize the end of the 1960s. Durant’s sculpture asks us to see the historical complexity of the late 1960s, and his portrait of Smithson, entitled Altamont 1969 (1998) associates Smithson—who died tragically in 1973—with the unfulfilled promises of the artistic and countercultural movements of the 60s.

About Melanie Smith:
British artist Melanie Smith (b. 1965) frequently references Smithson’s ideas in her work, which often explores the urban environs of Mexico City, where she has lived and worked since 1989. Through a diverse range of media and multiple perspectives, Smith’s art explores the economic and social patterns of the city and how they translate into artistic forms. Smith’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; OMR Gallery, Mexico City; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; Tate Gallery, London; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston.

In 2002 Smith collaborated with artist Rafael Ortega to make the video Spiral City, shot from a helicopter circling over Mexico City’s crowded maze of buildings, streets, and parking lots. Spiral City makes allusions to Smithson’s 1970 film Spiral Jetty, which was made in conjunction with his earthwork. Parts of Smithson’s film were also shot from a helicopter, and he recorded the noise of the helicopter blades, which supplied parts of the film’s soundtrack. Like Smithson, Smith also incorporates the sound of the helicopter into the video’s soundtrack, accompanying the spiraling view of Mexico City’s seemingly endless industrial grid.

Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is experiencing one of the best spring seasons in memory thanks to 3 feet of snow in the past week and a mid-mountain base depth topping 13 feet! With additional snowfall forecasted through the weekend, it’s not too late to squeeze in one more ski trip to the Bird.

She is a professor in the English Department at the University of Utah, where she teaches creative writing and literature and currently directs the Creative Writing Program as well as, with co-director Fred Adler, the Utah Symposium in Science and Literature, which she founded. So, what's your story? Spy Hop Productions REEL Stories Workshop will give you the chance to tell your story to the world. Be one of twelve high school students (ages 16-19) who write, direct, and edit their own five-minute documentary film in Spy Hop's socially conscious and open learning environment.

No prior film experience is needed. Students receive advanced training in lighting, shooting, sound and editing from award-winning filmmakers to help you tell your story. Your finished product will then premiere on the big screen at a local theater.

All applicants are expected to go through an assessment process that includes meeting with other potential students and an interview with the instructor.

One of the great photographers of the twentieth century, Helen Levitt took the activity of city streets as her primary subject, paying special attention to the children for whom the street served as a playground. This presentation of photographs drawn from the UMFA's collection includes representative works from the late 1930s and early 1940s–when Levitt emerged as a key member of the New York School photographers–as well as later photographs from her long and accomplished career. Together these works highlight Levitt's astonishing capacity for capturing lyrical and mysterious moments in the everyday life of the city. This exhibition is presented with support from Albion Financial Group.

for 2011-2012 season

The Utah Opera Chorus will be holding auditions for the 2011-2012 Utah Opera season on March 28, 2011.

Members of the Utah Opera Chorus, directed by Dr. Susanne Sheston, have the opportunity to work with nationally and internationally-acclaimed conductors, stage directors and principal artists.

“Performing with the Utah Opera Chorus was a valuable and rewarding experience for me,” said Heather Madsen, who performed with the chorus in Utah Opera’s most recent productions of Verdi’s Macbeth and Puccini’s Suor Angelica. “Dr. Sheston is such a talented musical director, and I have been able to work with some big name opera singers and observe their acting, singing and preparation at close range.”

The repertoire for Utah Opera’s 2011-2012 season includes Beethoven’s Fidelio, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Donizetti’s Elixir of Love, and Carlisle Floyd’s Of Mice and Men. Chorus members are paid an honorarium for participation in each production.

Auditions will be held at the Utah Opera Production Studios between 4 and 8 p.m. by appointment only. Applicants should be trained singers with significant stage experience. They must have one aria or art song prepared from memory and may be asked to sight-sing. Applicants can contact Ashley Magnus, amagnus@usuo.org to request an audition.

This special exhibition commemorates the 100th birthday of abstract Utah artist Don Olsen (1910-1983). Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, abstraction was unfamiliar to many local audiences, and Olsen’s work was often misunderstood. Today, however, he is acknowledged as one of the most influential and gifted abstract artists to have worked in the region. A student of Hans Hoffmann, Olsen created abstract expressionist works using volumes, colors, and shapes derived from nature. Through large-scale paintings spanning more than forty years, Don Olsen: Abstracts from Nature will highlight prominent works from the artist’s oeuvre.

Salt Lake County’s website has won national recognition for openness by a government transparency watchdog. Sunshine Review announced the county was among ten governmental websites in Utah as winners of its annual “Sunny Awards.”

“Our nation is greatly strengthened when we have an open and accountable democracy. It’s what the founders envisioned,” says Mayor Peter Corroon. The Mayor adds that Salt Lake County is committed to open government, “A little sunshine never hurt anybody.”

The Sunny Awards recognize the best state and local government websites in America that exceeded transparency standards. This year only 100 of more than 6,000 government websites ranked by Sunshine Review earned a Sunny Award.

Utah Symphony to Perform Mozart Compositions

The Utah Symphony to Perform Some of

Mozart's Final Compositions

Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, his Clarinet Concerto in A Major and his 22nd (and final) opera, “The Magic Flute,” are some of his more successful works, some of the last he composed in his short life and some of the highlights of an upcoming program by the Utah Symphony.

Internationally acclaimed guest conductor Matthias Bamert and Utah Symphony principal clarinetist Tad Calcara will join the Utah Symphony for these performances, March 25 and 26 at 8 p.m. in Abravanel Hall. Bamert most recently conducted the Utah Symphony in 2009, and has always been a favorite among Utah Symphony orchestra members and patrons.

Bamert, Calcara and the orchestra will not only feature the music of Mozart, but also how his role as an operatic composer influenced his last symphonic works and how other composers can gain inspiration for their orchestral compositions from their own operas.

The evening will begin with Mozart’s overture “The Magic Flute,” composed in the last year of his life, followed by Hindemith’s “Mathis der Maler” Symphony, based on one of Hindemith’s own operas about Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald. Calcara will then solo with the Utah Symphony for Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, also composed in the last year of Mozart’s life. The program will conclude with Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, featuring some of the composer’s most dramatic, emotionally charged music. There is much of Mozart the opera composer in his last symphonies, and this program finale will clearly demonstrate that connection to audience members.

Bamert, along with Toby Tolokan, Utah Symphony Vice President of Artistic Planning, will present a free pre-concert lecture each night, 45 minutes prior to the start of the performance in the First Tier Room of Abravanel Hall.

Matthias Bamert

Matthias Bamert, Conductor

Matthias Bamert’s distinguished career started at the Cleveland Orchestra where he was Resident Conductor alongside the then Music Director Lorin Maazel. Since then he has held Music Director positions with the Swiss Radio Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Associate Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He has recently finished a highly successful period as Music Director of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Music Director of the London Mozart Players for seven years, he has masterminded a hugely successful series of recordings of works by “Contemporaries of Mozart" which has already exceeded 50 symphonies. In 1999, the orchestra’s 50th anniversary year, he conducted them at the BBC Proms, in Vienna and at the Lucerne Festival and returned with them to Japan in January 2000. He has worked frequently in the concert hall and studio with such orchestras as the Philharmonia, the London Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, has appeared regularly at the London Proms, and often appears with orchestras outside London such as the BBC Philharmonic and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Director of the Glasgow contemporary music festival Musica Nova from 1985-90, Bamert became known for his innovative programming and has conducted the world premieres of works by many composers such as Takemitsu, Casken, Macmillan and Rihm. His gift for imaginative programming came to the fore during his tenure as Director of the Lucerne Festival (1992-98), when he was also responsible for the opening of a new concert hall, instituted a new Easter Festival, a piano festival, expanded the program and increased the festival’s activities several times over.

Tad Calcara

Tad Calcara, Clarinet

Tad Calcara began his position as principal clarinet of the Utah Symphony in 1999. He was born and raised in Oceanside, California where at the age of five began studying piano and later at the age of 12—clarinet. His first clarinet teacher was his father. In addition to his classical studies he played Jazz and Swing music with his grand father Carl Calcara who was leader of the popular Musi-Cals in Southern California. Mr. Calcara studied clarinet at the Manhattan School of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Cleveland Institute of Music. In addition he attended summer music festivals at Tanglewood, Aspen, Round Top, La Jolla Summer Fest and Music Academy of the West. Prior to his appointment to the Utah Symphony he performed with the New World Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and the Grand Tetons Music Festival Orchestra.

Mr. Calcara has been heard as soloist on numerous occasions with the Utah Symphony including performances of the Concertos of Copland, Mozart, Lutosloawski and Artie Shaw. In addition he was soloist with Michael Tilson Thomas and the New World Symphony, the Texas Festival Orchestra at Round Top (broadcast on NPR) and the Cleveland Orchestra. In recital he has performed for Radio France in Montpellier and in the spring of 1999 the first ever New World Symphony Honors Recital. He is also a frequent guest conductor/soloist with the Big Band Jazz Hall of Fame Orchestra based in California.

When not performing with the Utah Symphony he can be heard playing chamber music in and around Salt Lake City or leading his 15 piece New Deal Swing Big Band - performing classic Jazz & Swing Music from the 1930s. New Deal Swing has been guest soloist on the Utah Symphony Pops concert series in 2004, 2005, 2008 and the 2010 Deer Valley® Music Festival. In addition Mr. Calcara and New Deal Swing has performed at the Salt Lake International Jazz Festival as well as performing special centennial concerts for Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and a collaboration performance with Big Band Jazz legend, vocalist Herb Jeffries.

Experience The Smithson Effect, the most ambitious contemporary art exhibition ever organized by the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Through sculpture, video, photography, installation, and sound art, this exhibition will introduce visitors to twenty-three of the world’s leading contemporary artists whose work is influenced by the legacy of artist Robert Smithson (1938-1973). Best known for his pioneering earthworks–the most famous is Spiral Jetty in Utah’s Great Salt Lake–Smithson’s significance extends beyond his remarkable interventions into the landscape. The Smithson Effect brings together work by an array of international artists whose practices have been critically shaped by Smithson’s art and ideas.

“Little Women"

Utah Opera will present its company premiere of Mark Adamo’s remarkably successful new opera, “Little Women,” at the Capitol Theatre on March 12, 14, 16 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and March 20 at 2:00 p.m.

Based on the beloved novel by Louisa May Alcott, the story follows the four March sisters as they experience life, love and loss in 19th-century New England. Adamo’s affectionate 1998 adaptation seeks to capture the original characterizations and themes of the book, giving particular weight to Jo’s continual aversion to the changing relationships in her life and how she learns to overcome it. An excellent starter opera for those who know and love the story and a stunning new experience for the veteran opera-goer, this production will strike a chord with a vast array of audience members.

Cast members include Audrey Babcock as Jo, Jamie Van Eyck as Meg and Tanner Knight as Laurie, Directed by David Gately. The Utah Symphony will accompany each performance, conducted by Christopher Larkin – who also conducted the premiere of the opera in 1998. The opera will be sung in English with English supertitles.

With one twenty-minute intermission, approximate final curtain time will be 10:15 p.m. for evening performances and 4:45 p.m. for the matinee.

April Greenan will deliver a free Opera Preview Lecture on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the 4th floor meeting room of the Salt Lake City Library. Music professor and founding director of the McKay Music Library at the University of Utah, Dr. Greenan has written chapters on women in music and on the multicultural origins of Western music, created program notes for The Kennedy Center and The Lincoln Center and served on the musicology faculty of the University of Maryland at College Park.

Utah Opera Artistic Director Christopher McBeth will hold a Q&A session immediately following each performance in the Founders room on the mezzanine level at Capitol Theatre.

Utah Opera Announces 2011-12 Season

Utah Opera Artistic Director Christopher McBeth announced the Utah Opera’s complete 2011-12 season, featuring four dynamic works: a thematic opener, one of Verdi’s most enduring masterpieces, an Italian comedy and a stunning adaptation of a classic American novel.

The season will open with Beethoven’s only opera, “Fidelio,” which highlights the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, ideally presented in October of 2011, just after the tenth anniversary of 9/11. A subsequent January 2012 run of Giuseppe Verdi’s popular “Rigoletto” will explore matters of love, betrayal, jealousy and revenge. Following the thematic weight of “Fidelio” and “Rigoletto,” Utah Opera will present a bit of comic relief in the form of Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love“ in March of 2012. Carlisle Floyd’s adaptation of the classic American novel, “Of Mice and Men,” will close the season in May of 2012 as the continuation of McBeth’s American Opera Initiative for the Utah Opera.

The initiative aims to educate and expose Utah Opera audiences to new and classic American operas, a goal McBeth plans to reach by programming one into each new season. The current 2010-11 season’s upcoming production of “Little Women” by Mark Adamo in March will be the first opera to contribute to the initiative, followed by “Of Mice and Men” in 2012.

Utah Symphony collaborates with Utah Shakespeare Festival for "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Narrators from the Utah Shakespeare Festival will join the Utah Symphony and guest conductor Nicholas McGegan on a magical journey through Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

They will present this collaborative work on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26 at 8 p.m. in Abravanel Hall. Narrators include Utah Shakespeare Festival founder Fred Adams, the festival’s new artistic directors Brian Vaughn and David Ivers, and Kymberly Mellen, a regular festival performer and theater professor at Brigham Young University. The orchestra will also be joined by Utah Opera Ensemble Resident Artists Angela Theis and Kate Tombaugh, as well as the women of the Utah Symphony Chorus.

In addition to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the program will include Haydn’s Symphony No. 59 in A Major and Handel’s “Music for the Royal Fireworks,” all of which were initially intended to serve as background music for various subjects and later became more frequently performed as stand-alone works.

McGegan and Utah Symphony Vice President of Artistic Planning Toby Tolokan will present a free pre-concert lecture each night, 45 minutes prior to the start of the performance in the First Tier Room of Abravanel Hall.

Nicholas McGregan

Nicholas McGegan is loved by audiences and orchestras for performances that match authority with enthusiasm, scholarship with joy, and curatorial responsibility with evangelical exuberance. The London Independent calls him “one of the finest baroque conductors of his generation” and The New Yorker lauds him as “an expert in 18th-century style.” Through twenty-five years as its music director, McGegan has established the San Francisco-based Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra as the leading period performance band in America - and at the forefront of the 'historical' movement worldwide thanks to appearances at Carnegie Hall, the London Proms, and the International Handel Festival, Göttingen where he has been artistic director since 1991.

He has been a pioneer in the process of exporting historically informed practice beyond the small world of period instruments to the wider one of conventional symphonic forces, guest-conducting orchestras like the Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Toronto Symphony, and Sydney Symphony, the New York, Los Angeles, and Hong Kong Philharmonics, the Northern Sinfonia and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, as well as opera companies including Covent Garden, San Francisco, Santa Fe and Washington. Born in England, McGegan was educated at Cambridge and Oxford. He was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for 2010 “for services to music overseas.” Other awards include the Halle Handel Prize, an honorary professorship at Göttingen University, and an official Nicholas McGegan Day, declared by the Mayor of San Francisco in recognition of two decades' distinguished work with the PBO.

Fred C. Adams founded the Utah Shakespeare Festival in 1961 with his late wife Barbara Gaddie Adams. Under Adams's guidance, the Festival has grown from a budget of $1,000 and 3,276 paid admissions in 1962 to the upcoming 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2011 with an anticipated attendance of over 130,000 and an annual budget of $6.5 million. The Festival is considered one of the most prestigious theatres in the United States, as evidenced by the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre, which the Festival received in June of 2000. Adams is the consummate theatre professional. He is part teacher, part actor, part director, and a friend and mentor to those who work with him. After 42 years as the Festival director, he spends much of his time crafting the future for the Festival as he meets with artists and administrators to ensure the artistic integrity of the Festival’s plays, educational offerings, and numerous peripheral activities. During the past decade he has focused his energies on the completion of the New $32.7 million Shakespeare Theatre. Adams has received numerous awards including the 2010 Burbage Award from the American Shakespeare Center for a lifetime of service to the International Shakespearean theatre community, the 2010 Governor’s Award from the Utah Humanities Council, and the 2000Utah Theatre Association's Lifetime Service Award.

Stephanie J. Block has established herself as one of Broadway's most relevant and versatile leading ladies. She recently starred in 9 to 5: The Musical as Judy Bernly earning her a Drama Desk nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. Stephanie has also starred as Elphaba in the Broadway Company of Wicked and recorded her debut solo album, This Place I Know. Other Broadway credits include originating the roles of Grace O’Malley in The Pirate Queen and Liza Minnelli in The Boy From Oz (opposite Hugh Jackman). She also starred in the First Nat'l Touring Company of Wicked as Elphaba for which she won the prestigious Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Actress and the Carbonell Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Ms. Block has sung with numerous symphony orchestras throughout United States. She is a proud member of The Musical Theatre Guild and has been a member of Actors' Equity since 1995.

Julia Murney last appeared on Broadway as Elphaba in Wicked after playing the role on the national tour for which she received an Acclaim Award. Other New York credits include Lennon, Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party (Drama Desk nomination), The Vagina Monologues, A Class Act, Saved, Crimes of the Heart, First Lady Suite, and Time and Again (Lucille Lortel nomination). She’s been seen regionally all over the United States and in concert she has performed at Joe’s Pub, Feinstein’s, The Kennedy Center, Caramoor, Town Hall and Birdland as well as with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops and Steven Reineke and the Cincinnati Pops. Among her TV credits are 30 Rock, Sex and the City, Ed, NYPD Blue, all three Law and Orders and about a gazillion voiceovers. A Syracuse University graduate, her recordings include the original cast albums of The Wild Party and A Class Act, the Grammy nominated Actor’s Fund Benefit of Hair and her first solo album, I’m Not Waiting which is available on Sh-K-Boom records.

By mid-February, construction crews will begin demolishing Tracy Aviary's entrance building. This structure is a retrofitted garage that has never worked particularly well as a guest services facility. Taking its place will be a stunning new education and guest services building funded by Tracy Aviary's 2008 bond. Clad with a façade of beautifully patterned steel panels, the building will include classroom space, office areas, and a gift shop and ticketing area. The project is off to a great start, having recently received a design award from the Utah Chapter of the American Institute of Architects before a single shovel has touched the ground!

Construction should run through most of 2011, but Tracy Aviary will be open for business as usual. During the construction period, visitors will enter through a temporary entrance located at the northwest corner, just off the main road that runs around Liberty Park. Tracy Aviary's parking lot will be unaffected, and access should be as easy and convenient as it's always been.

So as winter comes to a close, consider paying a visit to Tracy Aviary. It's a great time to check out their wonderful birds as well as our exciting construction projects.
